Hawaii Baptist advances over Kalani, 50-43

Jennifer Uehara scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and added four blocks last night as Hawai'i Baptist held off Kalani, 50-43, the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Basketball State Championships.

The Eagles improved to 12-2 and will face No. 2 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Kamehameha-Hawai'i (10-2) in today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal at Kalani. The host Falcons fell to 6-10 and will meet McKinley in a 3 p.m. consolation bracket game.

Taili Iinuma hit a 3-pointer, one of 10 in the game for Kalani, to pull the Falcons within 46-43 with about 30 seconds remaining last night.

But HBA put the game away by going 4 of 6 from the line over the final 26 seconds.

Lauren Sumida added 10 points for the Eagles.

Haley Omiya led Kalani with 15 points, including four 3-pointers. Carly Kakuda hit three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.

Hanalani 41, McKinley 38

Sarah Liva scored 19 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and added six blocks to lead the Royals past the Tigers at Kalani.

Hanalani improved to 13-3 and will face No. 3 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Maryknoll (13-0) in tonight's 7 o'clock quarterfinal at Kalani.

McKinley (8-8) trailed 41-37 but was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 4.4 seconds remaining. After making the first but missing the next two, the Tigers grabbed the rebound but missed the potential game-tying 3-pointer as time expired.

McKinley had led 27-13 late in the first half, but the Royals scrambled back and eventually took a 34-33 lead with just under six minutes left in the game.

Hanalani won despite going just 1 for 9 from the free throw line, including 0-for-8 in the first half.

Tiare Sugui led the Tigers with 12 points, including three first-half 3-pointers, and Miranda Schmillen added 10 points.

Honoka'a 58, Seabury Hall 26

Yvonne Daniels scored 13 points and Hunter Liftee added 12 points as the Dragons pulled away from the Spartans at Radford's James Alegre Gym.

Shemika Frazier and Precious Chong each added 11 points for Honoka'a, which improved to 8-5 and will face No. 4 seed and Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champ Kaua'i High (11-2) in today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal at Radford.

The Dragons led 24-16 at halftime and stretched the lead to 41-23 entering the fourth period.

Tiana Camarillo scored 11 points to lead Seabury Hall, which fell to 5-2 and into today's 3 p.m. consolation bracket game against University High (11-3).

Hawai'i Prep 50, University High 38

Leahi Lindsey and Chancis Fernandez each scored 14 points to lead Ka Makani, who improved to 8-5 and will face No. 1 seed and O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference champion Radford (9-4) in tonight's 7 o'clock quarterfinal at James Alegre Gym.

Crystal Wang scored 10 points to lead the Junior Rainbows.
