Radford rallies past Campbell, 53-48, in West opener
'EWA BEACH - Tony Reid scored 19 points, including 8-of-8 free-throw shooting in the second half, to help Radford rally by Campbell, 53-48, Tuesday night in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West season opener at Campbell.
The Rams cashed in on the Sabers' aggressive play, converting 23 of 33 free throws. Playing with just 10 of their 13 players, the Sabers were hurt further when four starrers - game-leading scorer Allan Otanes (22 points, six 3-pointers), BJ Halmos, CJ Ramos and Christopher Crawford - fouled out.
"Our kids play aggressive," Campbell coach Wyatt Tau said. "We had too many fouls."
The Rams trailed 35-26 early in the third quarter after one of Otanes' six 3-pointers. But fouls kept putting the Rams to the line, as they chipped away at the Sabers' lead. The Rams trailed 38-32 before going on a 9-0 run between from the end of the third quarter to the start of the fourth to gain the lead.
"We played all right," Rams' coach Wayne Keys said. "We still have a lot of work to do. We go back to practice tomorrow and get ready for Mililani on Thursday."
The teams put each other through the wringer and that doesn't bode well with the compact schedule. The Rams play four league games in the next eight days. The Sabers have four in the next six because of a nonleague game against an Australian team Friday, plus league games Thursday, Saturday and Monday.
"We call our players student-athletes, so we need to look at (the scheduling) a little bit better," Keys said. "But we'll be all right."
The Sabers did tie the game at 43 with 4:37 left when Jacquan Middleton hit both ends of a one-and-one. But three turnovers by the Sabers helped the Rams pull away again, by as much as 51-45 with less than 20 seconds left before Otanes' sixth 3-pointer pulled Campbell to within three. With nine seconds left, Otanes missed the front side of a one-and-one and Reid made both his free throws with five seconds left to seal the game for the Rams.
