One night after a back-and-forth match in the state semifinals, Molokai dominated at the most opportune time.

Kalei Vaivai was unstoppable all night, burying 19 kills to help second-seeded Molokai sweep top-seeded University High, 25-12, 25-10, 25-18, to win Saturday night's title match of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division II Girls Volleyball State Championships at McKinley High School.

"We just played hard," said Vaivai, the tournament's most outstanding player. "We came out and played harder than last night. We thought we had to play harder, we had to step up."

Natalia Levi finished with eight kills and Kailana Ritte-Camara had seven kills to help the Farmers (12-0) become the first Maui Interscholastic League team to win a state volleyball title.

"We were fired up," said Vaivai. "We came here wanting to win the state title. Who doesn't come here not wanting to win the state title?"

The Farmers dominated through the first two sets and looked dramatically different from Friday's close four-set win over Hawaii Baptist. University High (16-4) put up a challenge in Set 3, cutting a six-point deficit to 10-9 on Kaena Kaina's kill that forced Molokai to call a timeout.

Quynne Eharis' kill helped the Junior Rainbows close to 13-11 before the Farmers scored the next six points. Kalei Adolpho had two kills, Ritte-Camara had a kill and Levi had a pancake dig - one of 19 digs she had on the night - that went over the net and dropped for a kill. Molokai controlled the rest of the way. Ritte-Camara also had 19 digs and Adolpho had five kills.

"Everybody says that we have talent on our island," said Molokai setter Kawena Puhi, who finished with 32 assists. "It feels good to show it and bring it back to our school."
