Parker siblings shared special week for Mililani baseball, softball teams

Last week was most certainly one to remember in the Parker household.

Twin siblings Emma and Jonah Parker, both juniors at Mililani, played key roles for the Trojans' softball and baseball teams in their respective runs to Division I state championships over the weekend.

The similarities in roles that the fraternal twins play for their teams are uncanny: both play first base and both bat clean-up. One distinct difference, however, is while Jonah — who goes by the nickname, JP — is left-handed, Emma is right-handed.

In three games in as many days during last week's Wally Yonamine Foundation Baseball State Championships, Jonah batted a combined 7 for 9, while Emma went 6 for 13 over four games in the DataHouse Softball State Championships. Both siblings were named to the all-tournament teams.

Mililani baseball coach Mark Hirayama was taken aback when he saw Jonah's statistical production over the course of his team's six games between the OIA and state tournaments. Jonah batted 7 for 10 during the Trojans' three league tournament games. He hit an astronomical .737 in the postseason after he hit at a .265 clip during the regular season.

"We're constantly working on not worrying about the results and being process-driven so I didn't realize his batting average was that night. What he did in the two tournaments was just phenomenal and against great pitching as well. He had some great two-strike at-bats where he was able to put the ball in play," Hirayama said.

Softball coach Rose Antonio was impressed by Emma's versatility at the plate. She opened the tournament with a 2-for-3 day against Lahainaluna last Tuesday, in which she swatted a pair of doubles, drew a walk, drove in a run and scored twice. Against Maryknoll in Wednesday's quarterfinals, Emma collected four hits in five at-bats, including a home run, with three RBI and three runs scored.

After she flashed her power in three extra-base hits in the first two days of the tournament, Emma put her plate discipline on display in Thursday's semifinal win over Kapaa, when she drew four walks against the Warriors.

"Her hitting approach during the state tournament was very disciplined and she actually looked for her pitch to hit. To walk four times, that's pretty good discipline right there and some of them she had two strikes on her already, so that's a good battle within herself to get on with those walks," Antonio said.

Jonah was able to at least pair hits in each game last week. He went 3 for 3 with a double, a run scored and he was also hit by a pitch in Thursday's quarterfinal win over Kamehameha-Hawaii. He then went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored against Kamehameha Friday before he closed out the tournament with a 2-for-3 night in Saturday against PAC-5 in the championship game.

"I thought the way that he came back at the end of the season was great. He went through it at the beginning of the year and the way he was able to push through it was really impressive and he's an angry person, so it's not fun to deal with at home, but seeing him being able to come back from that and have an amazing postseason was great to see," Emma expressed.

There is very much a competitive nature to their relationship, both siblings shared. At the end of the day, however, no matter how much ribbing gets dished out, they are each other's biggest fans.

"She's my best friend," Jonah said, "but it's ultra competitive. We try to beat each other in everything we do and we challenge each other and I think it's good because it pushes us. We don't really bag on each other, it's more of a building block for each other and we help each other out. If I notice something in her swing when she's not hitting, then I'll try to break down her swing and see what she's doing wrong and I'll just try to help her."

Emma noted as much, but also pointed out that there are times that she has not appreciated the feedback from Jonah.

"Sometimes I'll take the help, but if I'm not having the best day — like against Waianae I went 0 for 3 and he was just not giving me the end of it and I was just like, ‘OK, shut up. That's enough from you,' " Emma laughed.

Both Parkers workout almost daily at CU Strength & Conditioning in Waipio Gentry, but not necessarily together. Antonio said the proof is in the pudding when it comes to the extra work that Emma has put in.

"She's a very well-balanced player, a good offensive hitter and one of the best first baseman in high school softball in Hawaii. She works hard, she's very coachable, has a good attitude and not only does she come to practice but she goes and works out after practice and is consistently putting in the extra time in her game on her own time. She's just a great player to have on your team," Antonio said.

Emma is in her second season as a starter. After serving as a backup to now-University of Hawaii sophomore Kolbi Kochi during her freshman year, Parker cracked the starting lineup as a sophomore last year. She primarily batted in the sixth spot and hit .500 (26 for 52) on the year. She tallied 13 extra-base hits (five homers, six doubles and two triples), drove in 22 runs and scored 16 times.

With the graduation of Makanalei Watkins-Villegas, who batted clean-up a year ago, and the departure of No. 3 hitter Jerrell "Ori" Mailo, who early enrolled at the University of Oklahoma to forego her senior year of high school, Parker moved up two spots in the batting order — right behind Hinano Bautista.

"It's been great because whether you choose to pitch to Hinano or not, you have Emma right behind her and actually our first six or seven batters, they did really well so if you don't pitch to one, then you gotta pitch to the other or if you intentionally walk one, then you got another batter coming up like Emma — I call her Parker," Antonio said.

Parker batted .442 (23 for 52) this year, including 10 extra-base hits (three homers, four doubles and three triples). She drove in 21 runs and scored 21 times on the season.

Jonah offered his scouting report on his older (by two minutes) sister.

"She's got a good glove at first — she knocks the ball down — she's got a nice arm, she's not scared to throw it. She's got great bat to ball and she's got a little bit of pop so she can put it out of the yard if she catches one. I would love her frame and build as a scout because she's pretty tall and long, so those are some of the things you look for," Jonah said.

Aside from her offensive production, Emma, who stands 5 feet, nine inches tall, has provided steady defense at first, Antonio added.

"She has a good stretch as the ball is coming. She's tall so a lot of close plays at first, we get the outs because she's stretching for that ball. She'll pick balls in the dirt and digs them out, so she saves some errors and fielding, she'll eat those ground balls. She's made a couple diving plays this season as well where she laid out for balls. I'd say she's just an athletic first baseman," Antonio offered.

Hirayama made note of the mental approach that Emma brings that he has come to admire — something that, he says, Jonah could glean from.

"I think Emma's got a little bit better head on her shoulders as far as staying even-keel," Hirayama chuckled.

"Their relationship is like oil and water, they're always riding each other, always competing and she knows how to pull his strings, which is kind of funny. I told him, ‘JP, If we had to pick a team, I'd probably pick her before I pick you.' To get under his skin, that's the one I use, but they're both great athletes and competitors and sometimes you need that little push to keep you going," Hirayama said.

Emma gave her take on Jonah as a ballplayer.

"Very good hitter, good glove, just all around really good player and hard to stop, I'd say, when he's in the right mental state," she jabbed.

Emma went on, "I'd say I'm just a lot more patient and I kind of think about things before I do it so I'm very analytical. I'm an over-thinker, I like to be perfect. Jonah, he just does whatever he wants; He's super in the moment. I think I hold my composure better than he does, but I think we just even each other out."

Jonah, for his part, admitted that his sister played a key role in helping him break the slump that he was mired in for much of the preseason and early part of the regular season.

"She helps me a little bit more on my mental side, especially at the beginning of the season, which was kind of rough. I was in a really bad slump, probably one of the worst stretches I went through. I remember some of the games I struck out in every at-bat and I just felt lost and kind of hopeless, but she was there for me when I needed it and was just a good supporter," Jonah said.

Jonah emerged as the baseball team's starting designated hitter as a freshman three years ago. He hit .310 (13 for 42) that season then took over at first base as a sophomore. Parker raised his batting average to .349 (15 for 43) a year ago before that increased to .434 (23 for 53) this year. Hirayama noted that the 6-foot-1 Parker's defense has also shown improvement over the years.

"He's becoming a pretty good defensive first baseman. He's starting to move a little bit better and he's picked us up a little bit, especially during those (OIA and state) tournaments where he made some big picks at first, but he's probably known more for his bat," Hirayama said.

Beyond the bond the siblings share, the baseball and softball squads at Mililani were each other's biggest fans.

When the boys played KS-Hawaii last week, a handful of the softball players showed up to support them at Hans L'Orange Park. When the tournament shifted to Les Murakami Stadium the next day, the entire softball team took in several innings of the baseball team's semifinal game against Kamehameha before they got ready for their state title matchup against Moanalua.

After the baseball boys took care of business against the Warriors, they, in turn, made their way across the street to take in the softball team's successful defense of their state championship.

"It was great to see the girls come over to our games and support us and we were able to reciprocate that and go support them. Coach Rose and I have a great relationship and it's unreal the support that we have for each other and our teams and it goes back to the family atmosphere that we're trying to develop at school and just include everybody in the positive things that we do," Hirayama said.

Antonio, a twin herself, had much the same to say about the support system for both teams.

"I think our programs are like family. Our players, they're pretty close knit and I'm all for supporting each other. It's wonderful to see  and it's wonderful that both programs had historical years. We can say that we won in the same year and not many schools have that opportunity, but I'm so happy for coach Mark, he deserves it," Antonio said.

Both Parkers relished the opportunity to share state championships with one another by the end of Saturday night.

"It's super cool that both of our teams won and it's pretty special to have two siblings on the two teams. The boys work so hard every single day, we work really hard, so it was just kind of cool to see it pay off. I think we're trying to do a big beach day next weekend to celebrate the end of the season," Emma said.

Jonah described the exchange between the two following Saturday's baseball state championship as straightforward.

"She was just proud of me and just told me good job," he stated.

Emma elaborated a bit more on both what her brother shared with her when the softball team won its third straight title Friday night, as well as what she told him the following night.

"He said he wasn't surprised and that was he proud of me and then after his game Saturday I gave him the biggest hug and told him, ‘I'm so proud of you,' and he screamed and he was so excited," Emma laughed.

Despite the occasional ribbing and getting under each other's skin, it is evident there is an unmistakable bond between the twins.

"He can be the typical brother, always in my room flexing in the mirror, but yeah, I'd say he's probably my best friend, too. We're really close. We butt heads, as all siblings do, but we're super close, we're there for each other and we also have a telepathy thing, so one of us can tell when the other is down," Emma said.

Surely, both Emma and Jonah will be looked to provide leadership — as well as on-field production — for their respective teams as seniors next year, but no matter the difficulties and struggles that may arise, they know they have one another.
