Ayudan played key role in KS-Hawaii's two-game sweep of Hilo last week

KSH Athletics

Brock Ayudan's been at it for a long, long time.

Ayudan, a sophomore shortstop for the Kamehameha-Hawaii baseball team, is in his second season with the Warriors, but has really grown up around the program for many years. His father, Wayne — who goes by the nickname ‘Buddy' — is a longtime assistant on coach Andy Correa's staff.

"Brock's pretty much been in our program since he was five. He was coming to practices, taking grounds ball since small-kid time. He's been around practice and he's been around the work, the defensive drills and everything we do since he was a kindergartener at Kamehameha," said Correa, who is in his 21st season leading the Warriors.

Correa is sometimes reflective of how Ayudan's virtually grown up before his eyes. To be sure, the familiarity of his surrounding has given Ayudan a leg up on some of his fellow teammates.

"I think being around the baseball program for so long has given him an advanced understanding of what he wants to do to get better. He's someone who takes care of what he eats, gets his rest, he always take responsibility with his training and we've had some good examples for the last five, six years of guys that do pretty much the same thing. He's kind of followed the rest of the infielders that we had those past four, five years as a model and it's paying off for him now," Correa said.

Ayudan's accelerated acclimation to the varsity level was evident by his winning the starting shortstop job as a freshman last year.

"We had all senior starters last year except one junior and one freshman," Correa recalled.

Initially it was Ayudan's glove that helped him crack the starting lineup.

"He's very advanced defensively. He's really smooth and real polished defensively. He has good sound fundamentals and has expanding range as he gets older," Correa described.

Eventually, however, Ayudan's bat came around and he sometimes filled in at designated hitter.

"We knew he could hit, but it was just a matter of getting adjusted to the varsity level and the fact that we had seven senior starters so we batted him back of the order or sometimes we'd DH him, but he was the best defender we had," Correa said.

Ayudan went from batting near the bottom of the order to the two-hole this year. His work ethic in the offseason led to Ayudan adding some muscle mass to his 5-foot-9 frame. He now weighs about 165 pounds, according to Correa.

"He got physically bigger, but he's still got room to put on weight. The kid is just a worker. He's always doing more, he's always doing his defensive work, hitting, so he's very much self driven," Correa said.

KS-Hawaii posted a 13-2-1 overall record in 2025, including a runner-up finish in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation. The Warriors lost their first-round game at the state tournament to eventual-champion Saint Louis, but rebounded to win their next two consolation bracket games against Iolani and Kailua.

Correa's squad has put together an 8-4 record this spring. KS-Hawaii once again finished runner-up in the league to Waiakea, which comes with a return trip to the state tournament.

Ayudan has been an integral component to the Warriors' success. He is batting .486 on the year and leads the team in hits with 18. Ayudan has hit safely in 10 of 12 games this season, including five multi-hit games, two of which came in a pair of wins over Hilo last week in the best-of-three BIIF semifinals.

In last week Monday's first game of the series, Ayudan batted 3 for 4 with two doubles and a walk. He reached on an error in his only at-bat that didn't result in a hit. Ayudan drove in one run and scored twice to help the Warriors pull out a 5-4 win over the Vikings in eight innings.

"I think it's just he's starting to gain more confidence in what he can do and what is working for him, that's one of the main things and just getting more comfortable competing. When they're younger it takes time for them to feel like they've arrived and feel like they can assert themselves. Athletically, some kids are kind of waiting for that time and I think that time is starting to arrive for him, so it's the mentality and just the feeling confident about what he can do at this level," Correa said.

The teams went to extra innings again in Wednesday's rematch. KS-Hawaii once again prevailed in eight frames by a final score of 5-3 and like he did on Monday, Ayudan largely factored into the result. Ayudan, who is right-handed by bats from the left side, collected four hits, all of them singles. He also scored a run and drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning.

"Our ninth batter got on, we bunted the guy over with one out and he went up there with two outs and drove in the winning run," Correa said.

Ayudan batted 7 for 9 and tallied nine total bases over the two-game set.

"He was in the middle of just about every run we scored in those two games," Correa added.

Correa noted that one look at Ayudan's spray charts would show his versatility as a batter.

"He has the ability to hit the ball to all fields, line to line. He'll turn on balls and hit doubles down the left field line and then he'll put ‘em in the alley or to the right field corner. I think a lot of it goes back to the confidence he's gained and just the mental approach that he's going to determine what he's going to hit and now he's figuring out that that can work at this level," Correa said.

Defensively, Ayudan also registered six assists in game one and three more in game two. He also recorded three putouts of his own Wednesday. On the year, Ayundan has a .950 fielding percentage.

"He's made maybe two errors the whole year, so he's just steady. Steady defensively, gaining confidence in everything and starting to play to his potential," Correa said.

Correa pointed out that Ayudan was recently fitted for glasses, which took some time getting accustomed to.

"He just got them during our varsity preseason in February so it's his first year of playing with glasses. Prior to then he was having problem seeing, so we had him go to the doctor," Correa said. "He struggled some in the preseason and during the JV season and I think the struggles affected him physically to the point where he was trying to make adjustments, but once he got his glasses and he got used to it, he's been doing a lot better."

Ayudan leads the Warriors with five doubles. He has driven in 10 runs and scored 14 on the year. Correa is pleased to see Ayudan's hard work pay off.

"I'm very happy for him because I know how much time and effort he puts into his training and his preparation throughout the year and now he's being rewarded for all that commitment. He does stuff nobody else wants to do so that on game day he's able to do stuff nobody can do," Correa said.

Correa has seen Ayudan go from a "little baby" following dad around the practice fields to a confident, yet soft spoken leader of his peers.

"He always has a big grin on his fast, but it's tough to get any words out of him. He doesn't say much, but he's starting to get a little bit more vocal and you see a little more emotion coming out of him when he plays, but he's still just a humble, quiet kid.

KS-Hawaii is coming off of a 6-2 loss to top-ranked Waiakea for the BIIF championship on Wednesday. They will open play in the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Division I State Championships Wednesday at Hans L'Orange Park.
