Yamasaki brings veteran presence, big bat to surging Cougars

Rayden Aoki | SL

Rylee Yamasaki has been nothing short of an RBI machine this spring.

Yamasaki, a senior shortstop for the Kaiser softball team, leads the state — by a wide margin — in runs batted in with 28. But the value Yamasaki, a four-year starter and three-time All-OIA East First Team all-star, brings to the Cougars goes far beyond the numbers.

Kaiser coach Blaine Yoshioka describes the 5-foot-2 Yamasaki as a leader by example.

"She's not the most boisterous. She's kind of quiet, but she has all the tools," Yoshioka said of the right-handed Yamasaki, who will sign with Chaminade next week.

"For one thing she can hit. She's probably one of the best hitters that I've coached or seen directly. She has a strong arm, she has a good glove and she has speed. Beyond that she just has a good knowledge of the game because she's been playing from young-kid time, so she'll do all the little things on the field but she's not going to be loud about it. She's not going to stand out because she's yelling or anything like that, but she'll stand out because she can play," Yoshioka noted.

That has been evident since Yamasaki's freshman year with the Cougars, when she was selected as Player of the Year in the OIA Division I East. Yamasaki posted a .519 batting average with 29 runs batted in and 26 runs scored that year.

The following season Yamasaki hit .500 with 19 RBI and 19 runs scored and earned first-team all-league honors for a second straight year. As a junior in 2025, Yamasaki recorded a .478 batting average with 22 RBI and 17 runs scored. Despite a bit of a mid-season slump, she once again earned OIA East first team recognition.

Yoshioka attributed Yamasaki's mid-year struggles to her trying to do too much.

"She felt like she had to carry the team. Being that she's our most productive hitter that pressure was on her, but once she kind of let it come to her and relaxed, settled down and tried not to do too much, then she was able to get back into the rhythm toward the end of the season. Sometimes even taking a little break from hitting — because she always wants to practice, which is a good thing, but sometimes it's too much — so sometimes taking the bat away can help," Yoshioka said.

While it's clear that Yamasaki has set a high bar for herself, her production this season has been off the charts. In Kaiser's six contested games thus far, Yamasaki has collected 15 hits in 23 at-bats (.652 batting average). All but two of her hits have gone for extra bases, including five home runs — one shy of the state lead.

"She thing is she could always hit for average, but now she's a little bit older and she's gotten stronger so now she can hit it out and the result is more home runs. The ones that were going to the gaps and hitting the fence a year ago, they're going out now, so that's been the biggest difference from last year is she's gotten more power; She's little but she's strong," Yoshioka stated.

Yamasaki also ranks among the state's leader in doubles (5), triples (2), batting average and runs scored. She has recorded no fewer than two hits in any game this season, including a 4-for-4 game, in which she hit for the cycle, drove in seven runs and scored four times in a win over Kailua early last month.

In the rematch versus the Surfriders last week, Yamasaki reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances. She began the day with an inside-the-park home run to bring in the first three runs of the game. She then walked on four pitches her next time up. In the third inning, Yamasaki smacked a two-run double to the opposite field before she was hit by a pitch in her final plate appearance and came around to score for a third time.

"When we need the hit she gets it done. That inside-the-parker was a no-doubter that she would score and that really started us up and got the scoring going and I think we just kept rolling after that," Yoshioka said of the 14-0 rout that was called after the top of the fifth inning.

The very next day Yamasaki put forth arguably her best single-game offensive performance when she batted 3 for 5 with two home runs and a double. She accounted for 10 total bases, drove in a career-best nine runs and scored four times in the 24-12 win over Castle in six innings.

Yamasaki, the Cougars' second batter in the lineup, opened the scoring with an RBI-double to center in the top of the first. An inning later, she hit her first of two grand slams on a 2-0 pitch that gave her team an 8-0 cushion.

"Castle doesn't have a fence, but I think it would have been out at any field with a fence; it was pretty deep. They were already playing deep and she hit it over their heads and the thing is she had to adjust as a hitter because Castle's pitchers are on the slower side and that can be hard to get that timing down sometimes for some of the kids," Yoshioka detailed.

Yamasaki reached on an error in her next at-bat and scored on a triple by Paisley Kuba to stretch the lead to 12-0. Two at-bats later, Yamasaki crushed her second dinger of the game.

"That one was even deeper. I think that one was to left-center and at Castle, just like our field, the wind blows in, so she really got into that one," Yoshioka recalled.

Yoshioka added that production aside, Yamasaki has proven to be very reliable at the plate in clutch situations.

"She's coming through more. Maybe last year during some big games she wasn't able to hit because of the pressure she put on herself, but this year she's just letting it go. It might be because she's not worried about where she's going to college so she's just more relaxed and is playing to her capabilities as best she can," Yoshioka said.

For as much power that Yoshioka possesses in her bat, she has also shown a vast improvement in her pitch selection.

"She has real good plate discipline. She rarely strikes out because she has a really good eye. She's gotten quite a bit of hits with two strikes because she'll just cover the plate — she's really good at that — and she'll take her walks when she has to. That discipline at the plate is from playing so much and just the practice and the mental reps that she takes, too," Yoshioka said.

Yoshioka noted that Yamasaki has been the beneficiary of the hitters both in front and behind her in the lineup, most notably leadoff batter Madeline Nelson (.556 batting average), No. 3 batter Paisley Kubo (.320), clean-up hitter Lia Hamamura (.350) and Mylah Burgess-Heely (.524), who bats fifth in the card.

"That's what makes it hard for other teams. If you walk Rylee, then you have to pitch to Paisley and so they keep pitching to her. If it was up to me, I would walk her. Even if I have to walk in a run, I would put her on, but that's up to them, but it's a good problem for us if they keep pitching to her," Yoshioka said.

Part of what makes Yamasaki special is her determination to keep improving, especially with a bat in her hands.

"It's her drive to be the best that she can be. She's always working on her hitting, making a tweak here, tweak there and even thought she's been hitting well, she's still trying to get better so she's really, really driven," Yoshioka explained.

Yamasaki's defense in the middle infield should not be overlooked either.

"If it's a routine play, it's gonna be an out. She has a real strong, accurate arm. Rarely does she have any bad throws and the other thing she's done better is her range has improved so she can get to more balls; She's pretty much the whole package, she can do everything. Chaminade is getting a real good player, if not a D1 prospect, just right under that," Yoshioka said.

Yoshioka also noted that soft-spoken Yamasaki, who is also a member of the school's soft tennis team, is one of the team captains this season.

"You're not going to get too many words out of her, but she leads with her actions. She's just that steady guide because as she goes, the team goes. The team follows her lead so she keeps them on the right path," Yoshioka said.

Kaiser is currently tied with rival Kalani for second place in the OIA D1 East standings. Both teams sit 1 ½ games behind first-place Moanalua heading into the final stretch of the regular season.

The Cougars have reeled off four straight wins since a 2-2 start to the year.

"I think we started off slow because we were trying to get players into position where they were productive, so hopefully we're on the upswing," Yoshioka expressed.

Yamasaki and the Cougars (6-2), who are ranked ninth in this week's ScoringLive Power Rankings, have a pivotal showdown at No. 8 Moanalua (8-1) Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Salt Lake.
