Kellen Fortson | Special to SLA day in the life of Zyon Telles-Kuwahara is not for the weary.
Telles-Kuwahara, a Radford senior, is on a constant grind, whether it be in the classroom, in the weight room, on the football field, the cheerleading mat or the baseball diamond.
As a three-sport athlete and one of five siblings, there is no shortage of duties and responsibilities on Telles-Kuwahara's plate.
On the gridiron, Telles-Kuwahara led the Rams in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns. During the same fall season, he helped the cheerleading team capture OIA and state championships in the co-ed division.
Through Radford's first two games of the baseball season this spring, Telles-Kuwahara has produced prolific numbers to help his team get off to an undefeated start in league play.
He does it all with his trademark quiet, yet determined demeanor.
"He's a competitor," Radford baseball coach Blaine Watanabe said of Telles-Kuwahara, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound outfielder.
"He's just a constant competitor and so having that level of determination and desire that he brings, he not only pushes himself, but it helps the team and we haven't had a lot of games, but he just gives us that extra edge," Watanabe added.
Telles-Kuwahara has certainly worked to hone his craft(s) over the years, although it hasn't come easy. He regularly leaves his family home in Waianae before the sun comes up.
"It's not like they live five minutes from Radford. Coming from Waianae there's always traffic, any time there's an accident or a road closed it makes that commute that much longer so that in itself is a lot, having the discipline to get up early every day, sit in traffic, come to school and then practices after school, getting home late at night and doing it all over the next day, that's hard in itself," Watanabe said.
By the time Telles-Kuwahara returns home the sun has long set over the horizon. After showering, eating dinner and doing homework, it doesn't leave Telles-Kuwahara with a whole lot of down time.
"There's definitely sacrifices being made not just by him, but by his family as well. For him, it might mean sleeping in the car during the community and not in bed, doing homework during lunch instead of relaxing with friends, so he does a good job at it and it's because he knows it's what has to be done. He wouldn't be able to be good in all of these things if he didn't buckle down in the classroom and have the discipline to get done what he needs to get done," Watanabe said.
Telles-Kuwahara defines the term student-athlete. He carries a 3.4 cumulative grade point average and will take his talents to Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Ore. next year, where he plans on joining the school's baseball team.
"It's all business for him: show up, go to class, go to practice, rest — he's got his routine down. He's not a guy you have to ever worry about acting up in school. Our guys are pretty disciplined; they do study halls after school, they're here at 6 in the morning lifting and so he's really good at being disciplined and setting the expectations and because he knows what he wants to do in the future, he knows what needs to be done," Watanabe said.
With all the various ties Telles-Kuwahara has to so many teams, it should come as no surprise that his versatility has served him well in numerous athletic arenas.
On the football field, he is a three-way player. In addition to wide receiver, Telles-Kuwahara is also a free safety on defense and kick returner on special teams. When he was pressed into running back duties early in the year, Telles-Kuwahara responded with 131 rushing yards and a touchdown on 28 carries against Waipahu.
In the cheerleading realm, Telles-Kuwahara is a standout to say the least. He proved pivotal to Radford's run of three straight league and state crowns and has also earned All-America distinction.
Telles-Kuwahara is a four-year member of the cheerleading team and is also a four-year starter for the baseball team. He burst onto the scene as a freshman three years ago, when he hit recorded a .455 batting average and received second team All-OIA Division II honors.
He earned first team all-league recognition as a sophomore second baseman two years ago, when he hit .354 with 10 runs batted in and 15 runs scored. Telles-Kuwahara led the Rams in numerous offensive categories out of the leadoff spot.
As a junior last year, Telles-Kuwahara shifted over to shortstop and batted in the three-hole. He once again led the team in hits (18), RBI (16), triples (4) and home runs (1). Telles-Kuwahara posted a .462 batting average on his way to a repeat selection as an All-OIA all-star. He also picked up All-Hawaii Honorable Mention recognition.
"He's not the biggest guy, but he's strong for his size. I think the biggest thing with his development has been his willingness to want to develop and get better and he's been able to do that even though he's hasn't had the time to focus on just baseball because he is a multi-sport athlete and is always bouncing from season to season to season and it wears on you a little bit," Watanabe said.
Among the many tools Telles-Kuwahara possesses in his skillset, Watanabe points to his speed as a distinguishing trait. It's part of the reason why Watanabe opted to move Telles-Kuwahara out of the infield.
"He'll be in either center or right field for us primarily. He's got the best arm of our outfielders right now, which gives us a little bit more of an edge in that right field position, and then with his speed — because that right-center gap is the deepest part of our park (Donald M. Kimura Field) — so having a guy that can move helps us out quite a bit," Watanabe explained.
Offensively, Watanabe dropped Telles-Kuwahara — who bats left and throws right — into the cleanup spot in the lineup card.
"We wanted to get him more RBI opportunities, but depending on what our lineup looks like, he'll bat either fourth or fifth," Watanabe said.
So far the change has produced what Watanabe had hoped for as Telles-Kuwahara leads the Rams in runs driven in (6), as well as runs scored (5). Through the first week of the season, he is batting a cool .500 and has reached base safely in seven of his eight plate appearances.
In last Thursday's season-opening win over Kahuku, Telles-Kuwahara batted 1 for 2 with two walks, including in his first plate appearance when he came around to score one of two Radford runs in the top of the first inning. Later in the game he led off the fifth frame with a walk, then proceeded to steal both second and third before he scored on a passed ball on a dropped third strike.
"On the bases he's dangerous. He's got speed but he's also gotten better at reading the pitcher's cadence and understanding the situations of what to look for, so he has that savvy on the bases and aggressiveness to create some havoc out there that leads other teams to pay attention to him, which is good for us," Watanabe said.
Telles-Kuwahara followed up that game with another productive day in a win over Nanakuli on Saturday.
In his first plate appearance, Telles-Kuwahara was hit by a pitch and came around to score. Just an inning later he reached on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly that gave his team a 7-0 lead. With the bases loaded in his next at-bat, Telles-Kuwahara lined a rope to right field that bounced over the right fielder and went all the way to the outfield fence. All three baserunners, as well as Telles-Kuwahara, came around to score on the two-out inside-the-park home run.
"He took a good swing — the pitch was a little bit up but he put a good swing on it — and he hit it well. He hit it hard — it was probably one of the harder ball he hit — and at Nanakuli that field is super hard so that thing just hit and launched over the right fielder and that's a deep field and it rolled all the way to the speed. With his speed, there was no doubt he was going to score, but even if it hadn't bounced over the guy's head, let's say it was in the gap, it still would have been an inside-the-parker because of how hard it was hit and because of his speed and where it was," Watanabe detailed.
Telles-Kuwahara's four-bagger broke the flood gates open and gave his team a 14-0 lead. The Rams went on to coast to 16-0 victory.
"Bases loaded, two outs — we practice that and that's where it shows up, so we needed that. It broke the game open for us. We weren't necessarily struggling with the bat, but we weren't producing in bunches, so that kind of just catapulted us that inning and gave us that momentum that we needed," Watanabe added.
Despite dealing with a big of a hamstring injury, Telles-Kuwahara finished with six RBI and three runs scored against the Golden Hawks.
"We're lucky to have him and we got a bunch of really good kids, so hopefully this year they have a really good season and I'm hoping he's gonna have his best season yet, but I think he's gonna be pivotal in our success this year with the experience and ability that he brings," Watanabe said.
Telles-Kuwahara and the Rams (2-0) were slated to face Waipahu Thursday and Waialua Saturday, but OIA executive director Bryce Kaneshiro announced Wednesday that the league has postponed all scheduled games across all sports due to storm that is hovering over much of the state this week.
