Smith capped triumphant return to Wolfpack with D2 state championship

Kana Smith had a senior season to remember.

Smith, a Maryknoll senior and three-year member of the PAC-5 girls soccer team, capped off a decorated prep career over the weekend by helping the Wolfpack to a third Division II state champion in four years.

The 5-foot-7 Smith scored a team-high 15 goals in the process, including a staggering seven goals in four state tournament games last week. Smith scored at least one goal in every game for the Wolfpack on their run to a seventh state crown.

"Kana came in clutch, big time," PAC-5 co-coach Ryan Leong said.

The Wolfpack opened the 12-team state tournament with a 3-0 win over Seabury Hall in Wednesday's first round. Smith scored one goal in each half. Her goal in the sixth minute gave her team an early lead and her second goal, which came in the 48th minute, closed out the scoring.

In addition to a a nagging groin strain that hampered Smith all season, she was on the receiving end of a charley horse in the game against the Spartans.

"She played through injuries all year and honestly, a lot of the teams already knew about her, so they tried to take her out by double-marking her, triple-marking her but she held her composure and she played through it and she balled out; She was fantastic," Leong said.

Smith produced two more goals the following day in a 3-0 win over Kailua in the quarterfinal round. She again scored six minutes into the contest and then found the back of the net five minutes into the second half.

It was in the quarterfinals that PAC-5 faltered a year ago, when it was on the losing end of a 2-0 decision to Kamehameha-Hawaii, which went on to win the D2 state championship.

The Wolfpack avenged that loss in Friday's semifinals, when they held on for a thrilling 2-1 win over the Warriors in a game that went to penalty kicks. Smith, once again, played a prominent role in the victory.

After Kamehameha-Hawaii got on the board in the 59th minute, Smith netted the equalizer just a minute later. The scoring play was initiated by a free kick from distance by Khloe Siscon. Siscon put a shot on frame that was saved by the Warriors' goalkeeper, however, it deflected off of her hands and Smith was in the right spot at the right time to put away the second chance.

"When we got the ball, we made use of it. I always tell Kana that if she's going to shoot, she's got to make sure the girls follow up on the shot and that's how we got the ball against Kamehameha-Hawaii. Khloe took a free kick and Kana followed it up — that's stuff we work on in practice," Leong said.

Both defenses held firm the rest of regulation and through two sudden-death 10-minute overtime periods to send it into a penalty kick shootout. Smith was one of four players to convert a PK for the Wolfpack, who edged the Warriors by a 4-3 margin in the shootout.

"To me, it's all her mindset. She didn't care if she was being double-marked, triple-marked — she knew what her job was as a forward, it was to score. We didn't have a strong offense and we knew that but she worked with the team that was given to her and a lot of the girls stepped up in the tournament, especially against Kamehameha-Hawaii," said Leong, who had high praise for the previously-undefeated and top-seeded Warriors.

"I believe they belong in Division I. That team was very, very good and that offense was very strong, but my dad, Shannon Leong, taught me that defense wins championships and we played team defense," Leong said.

In Saturday's state championship match against ILH champion and tournament No. 2 seed Mid-Pacific, Smith got the scoring started for the Wolfpack once more. She put her team ahead with her goal in the 11th minute. It came off of an assist from goalkeeper Kanai Gunmaker, whose punted sailed well into the Owls' half of the pitch and got by a defender. Smith gathered the ball after a few bounces and chipped it over the goalie.

PAC-5's 1-0 lead held through halftime and into the 46th minute, when Smith headed in a goal off of a corner kick by Ashley Ragain.

"Kana's a very smart and composed player and her read of the game is just unreal. Her touches are very good and she's very calm; She's never too high or low and the thing about her is she can play anywhere. If we need someone to go to a certain position, she's the one and it's always no questions asked, so she's very coachable and that's what we love about her," Leong expressed.

Mid-Pacific converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, but Carter Abele added an insurance goal for the Wolfpack five minutes later to cement the victory.

It was a triumphant return to the team for Smith, who helped PAC-5 win state titles in both her freshman and sophomore seasons before she opted to play her junior season in the state of Colorado. Ultimately, Smith wanted to close out her high school career with the Wolfpack and returned for her senior season.

"It was like she never skipped a beat," Leong said. "She came back and she fit right in."

Leong admitted a part of him was saddened upon learning the news that Smith would be leaving after her sophomore season, but ultimately supported her decision to take her talents to the continent.

"To me, anything that can help her get into college and thrive and go further with their soccer team is more important than playing a season. Of course, we would have loved for her to be here for that season, but I'm happy she found a college to play for and once she came back, of course, we were stoked," Leong said.

Smith, who attends Maryknoll, has signed to play at San Diego State next year.

While she was prolific on offense in the state tournament, Smith was just as valuable in the defensive third of the pitch during the ILH regular season. Despite their D2 designation, the Wolfpack played both D1 state finalists tough when they crossed paths early on this year.

PAC-5 fell to eventual-state champion Kamehameha 1-0 in a game played at Kapiolani Park on Dec. 12. A week later, against three-time defending state champion Punahou, it was edged by a score of 2-1.

"Kana's a utility player; She'll play anywhere. Throughout her years at PAC-5, we had her playing center-back, but depending on who we're playing, we can move her where we feel is best for the team. This season we had her mostly up top at forward and center-mid, but against the D1 schools we had her playing center-back and honestly, that's why we were successful against Kamehameha and Punahou, because we had her in the back; She's just such a solid player," Leong said.

Smith's versatility is but part of her value to the Wolfpack. She also provided leadership as a team captain, but even without that designation, it was clear that many of her teammates looked up to her, Leong said.

"She's definitely a role model. Kana is very mature for her age and she carries herself very well. She talks to people with respect, never talks down to anybody, is always supporting everyone and to me, that's true of how a leader should be. She's not bossy — she doesn't have an ounce of that in her — she's just a born leader in my opinion and the girls love her because she's very losing and very respectful, too," Leong said.

Smith was selected by the HHSAA and media covering the state tournament as its most outstanding player. She was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Kaycie Hayashi, Ashley Ragain, Jordan Remily and Gunmaker.

"I'm just very proud of every single one of them. The team came together and gelled together and played hard. Everybody peaked at the right time and timing is everything in sports. The girls played for each other and they prevailed and I'm just so proud of them," Leong said.

The Wolfpack completed the year with a record of 8-5-1 and captured their fourth state title in the last five years.
