Cougars knock off defending champion Trojans, will face Sabers next for OIA D1 girls soccer crown

KAPOLEI — A new champion will be crowned over the weekend.

No. 1 seeds Kaiser and Campbell will face off for the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls soccer crown Saturday night at Kapolei's Alvin Nagasako Sports Complex.

The Cougars and Sabers punched their ticket to the title game with shutouts of Mililani and Pearl City, respectively, in Thursday's semifinal doubleheader at the Hurricanes' facility.

Kaiser, the top seed out of the Eastern Division, knocked off defending league champion and West No. 2 seed Mililani by a score of 2-0 in the late semifinal.

The Cougars (10-0-2), who are ranked eighth in the ScoringLive Power Rankings, handed the fifth-ranked Trojans (9-1-2) their first loss of the year.

"It feels amazing. We just really wanted to get to the championship because this is the closest we got in a while and this is a really good team, so we didn't want to let it go to waste," said Kaiser senior Jadyn Ayano, who scored both of her team's goals.

Kaiser will be making its first appearance in the OIA final since 2018, when it lost to Mililani.

"Honestly, I can't even put it into words," said Cougars coach Noelani Bio, who is in her 10th year leading the program.

"It's so surreal, but these girls deserve it. They've earned every step of the way and they've had to put up with me for this long, so we've been dying to get back here," Bio said.

Ayano, one of a dozen seniors on the Kaiser roster, said the memory of falling short in the OIA tournament a year ago was on the minds of many of her teammates.

"We got close last year — we got to Waipahu in the semifinals (but) just couldn't finish it — but this year we didn't want to go back home with any regrets and we just left it all out on the field," Ayano said.

The Trojans controlled much of the possession in the first half, when they tallied four shots on goal. Conversely, the Cougars managed a lone shot on goal in the first 40 minutes.

Mililani peppered the goal early and often. Jaslene Cayetano registered her team's first shot on goal just seven minutes in, but it was knocked down by goalkeeper Natalie Barnhart. About 10 minutes later, Barnhart denied a header attempt by Mia Waki that was set up by a well-placed cross from Natalyn Fujikane.

Barnhart stopped two more shots on goal by the Trojans in the 24th and 25th minutes by Waki and Rylie Soriano, respectively.

However, Mililani was unable to cash in on any of its chances and the match remained scoreless at halftime.

"It gave us motivation, yeah, because preseason we played them and we were tied one-one almost the whole game (but) we just let them score in the last five minutes, so we knew if we could just hold them off, we could get shots in. We just had to not let anything go to waste and take everything we got," Ayano said.

Bio's squad played into the steady headwind coming down from Palehua mountain for the first half, but stood to benefit with the wind at its back after the break.

"We knew we had the wind so I think the girls were pumped knowing that that was kind of a slight advantage and I think they were just feeling good and feeling confident," Bio said.

Ayano got the Cougars on the board in the 50th minute. After Mililani's defense failed to clear a loose ball in its defensive third, Ayano gathered it in the midst of a trio of defenders and placed a right-footed shot over the goalie from about 22 yards out.

"I don't know if it was a pass through the middle or if it was a big kick over, but luckily I think it bounced over the defender's foot — there were two of them — it bounced over her foot as she stuck it out and I just ran over her foot, tried to get through both of them and just got a half-volley over the goalie's hands," Ayano recalled.

Bio credited Ayano for coming up with the possession despite being in the middle of a crowd of defenders.

"It took a weird bounce and she came up on the other end of it. She kind of spun around the girl and I think the defender lost the ball in the mix and it fell right at her feet and she just put it away, right over the keeper," Bio said.

Ayano said a slight change in the attacking third proved to be the difference in manufacturing her go-ahead score.

"I think in the beginning of the game we were trying to stay more sturdy in the midfield, but we switched it up, got some people up high and did the high press and it really worked for us," said Ayano, who started the game in the midfielder, but found herself up top later in the contest.

Mililani saw its leading scorer, Cayetano — who is signed with the University of Hawaii — leave the game momentarily in the 66th minute due to an apparent left knee injury. However, Cayetano returned to the pitch just four minutes later and finished out the contest.

Late in the match, Ayano doubled up her team's lead with her second goal of the night off of a 30-yard free kick that ricocheted off the goalie's hands and into the netting.

"I knew if I put it in a dangerous spot right in front of the goal it could give my team a chance so I just tried to put it on frame and luckily it just went in," Ayano said.

Kaiser's defense held Mililani to just two shots on goal after halftime. Barnhart registered six total saves.

"They're moving together as a team, stepping up as a team and they're just believing in each other at this point. We've come so far defensively — so disciplined, so composed — and I'm just so proud of them," Bio said.

It was the Cougars' eighth clean sheet on the year.

Mililani had scored 47 goals through its first 11 games this season and was coming off of a 9-0 win over Leilehua in Tuesday's quarterfinals.

The Trojans had not been shut out all year prior to Thursday. They were seeking a sixth straight OIA finals appearance.

In the early semifinal Thursday, Campbell took care of business against Pearl City by a score of 3-0.

Three different players scored a goal for the West top-seeded Sabers (10-0-2).

Freshman Cheyleeana Alcosiba-Bacalso broke the seal with her very first varsity goal in the eighth minute. Alcosiba-Bacalso helped Campbell's JV team win its second straight OIA title a week ago before she was promoted for the varsity postseason.

Alcosiba-Bacalso was in the starting lineup as a holding-mid. She found the back of the net with her right foot from about 45 yards out.

"Big time," Sabers coach James Curran said. "She was ready for the task and executed very well. She's got that big foot, so it was a pleasure to see her get that goal early on."

Campbell added insurance goals by Laila Lim and Nasha Kane after halftime. Lim scored on a header that was set up by a Meilani Navarro corner kick in the 42nd minute and Nasha Kane closed out the scoring with her goal in the 79th minute.

It was the ninth time that the Sabers held an opponent scoreless this season, much to the delight of Curran.

"We take pride in defending. Pearl City is no joke — they have legitimate threats — so we definitely made it a point to deny those threats," Curran said.

Campbell won all three meetings against the Chargers (7-6) this year and outscored them a combined 8-0 in those contests.

"We had no doubt that it was gonna be a challenge and we respected them regardless of what happened in the regular season because playoff teams are different — people make adjustments, they made their adjustments, but we kind of picked up on it and tried to capitalize on it," Curran said.

The Sabers will be trying for their fourth OIA championship and first since 2024.

"Campbell is a really good team. I have a lot of respect for Campbell and (Curran) because I know that they're very complete. They have a very solid culture building team so I know they play very well and they're very connected, so looking forward to it; It should be a good match," Bio said.

The Cougars' only league title came in 1997.

Kaiser and Campbell will kickoff at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday and will follow the Division II final between Kailua and Radford at 5 p.m.

Mililani will play Pearl City in the D1 third-place match Friday, 7 p.m. at Waipahu's Masa Yonamine Athletics Complex.
