Konawaena needs overtime to take down Maryknoll

A matchup of perennial state powerhouses once again did not disappoint.

Konawaena and Maryknoll went to overtime on the third day of the McKinley Black and Gold Classic, with the Wildcats outscoring the Spartans 11-4 in the extra period to post a 52-45 win.

Mikela Salazar-Harrell scored a team-high 14 points, 10 of those coming after halftime, to lead the way, but every player but one who checked into the game scored at least a point, and four different girls had two points of more in the overtime period.

Maryknoll was led by Pua Herrington with 14 and Zoe Silva with 11 points. Haikela Hiraishi, who played for Konawaena a season ago, finished with five.

The hard fought game that needed extra basketball was a stark contrast to the 25 point blowout the Wildcats posted a year ago at Student Council Gymnasium over the Spartans. Konawaena has won the last four meetings including this one, with Maryknoll's last victory over the Wildcats last coming in 2017, a 56-37 preseason win at McKinley.
