Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo wears multitude of hats for Na Alii

For Hiki Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo, there is no shortage of roles or responsibilities he has to the Aiea football team.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo, a four-year varsity starter for Na Alii, almost never leaves the playing field during a typical game. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior plays safety on defense, lines up at either wide receiver, running back or quarterback on offense and also returns both kicks and punts on special teams for good measure.

"He does everything," Aiea coach Mika Liilii stated.

In Na Alii's 46-25 win over visiting Iolani Saturday, Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo put his multitude of talents on display. He accounted for three touchdowns — two receiving and one rushing — and racked up 176 yards from scrimmage.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo was on the receiving end of nine passes for 104 yards, including touchdown receptions of 25 and 10 yards, and also ran for 66 yards on just four carries, including a two-yard TD plunge on fourth down.

It was that short run into the end zone — which pulled Aiea to within 14-12 with 9:09 left in the second quarter — that Liilii pointed to as what impressed him the most about Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo's performance against the Raiders.

"It was a fourth down and goal and he wasn't going to go down. He put his head down and just made sure he got in the end zone — it's those kinds of things that make Hiki special," Liilii recalled.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo followed that up by running in the ensuing two-point conversion to tie things up at 14-all.

Liilii draws a comparison to Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo's running style to that of former All-Pro NFL back Adrian Peterson.

"He just runs with a lot of anger. He's fast and he can hit you in the mouth at the same time. He's got flashy quickness, but he also brings some power with it," Liilii described.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo's versatility is evident when looking back on his impact over the years.

As a freshman in the fall of 2022, he showed his defensive prowess in back-to-back weeks in the postseason. Against Waipahu in the OIA Division I title game, Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo recorded an interception, a fumble recovery, one pass break up and 2 ½ tackles. The following week, in a state quarterfinal win over Lahainaluna, he again came up with a pick and a fumble recovery and made two tackles.

As a sophomore Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo led the team in rushing and ranked second in receiving yards. In late September of that year, he had nine catches for 170 yards and two TDs against Moanalua. A few weeks after that, he ran for 135 yards and three TDs on 18 carries against Nanakuli.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo opened his junior campaign with a seven-reception, 155-yard effort with one touchdown against Roosevelt. He went on to finish second on the team in receiving yards and led the team in rushing last fall. Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo earned All-OIA Division I First Team honors as a utility selection on offense.

"He plays a big role and he makes sure he's in shape to do all those things. Just seeing how he works hard and is always asking to go in the weight room to put in some extra work knowing what's ahead of him and that the season is going to be hard, so he prepares himself well," Liilii said.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo has picked up this season where he left off last year. Through three games, he has 16 receptions for 222 yards — fifth most in D1 statewide — with four touchdowns. He's also tallied 13 rushing attempts for 127 yards — nearly 10 yards per carry — with five trips to the end zone.

"People kind of automatically follow his lead because he leads by example. He leads with his actions, he leads without putting people down and he doesn't say much, but his actions speak for itself," Liilii said.

As talented as he is on the gridiron, Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo is one to sing his own praises — not by a long shot.

"He's very grounded. He's very humble and respectful. His family is real supportive and I think he was raised with respect and all of that good stuff. He's humble and he just flys around and enjoys playing. I think his overall character speaks louder than his actions on the field," Liilii added.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo's veteran presence has undoubtedly helped the development of freshman starting quarterback Caizel Jesus-Kapesi, who has passed for 623 yards and nine TDs against three interceptions this season.

"Hiki helps him a lot because if they're doubling him then somebody has to show up, so everybody knows that Hiki is going to attract a lot of attention and it's others' opportunities to go and make a play," Liilii said.

Outside of football, Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo has also been a member of Aiea's varsity boys basketball team since his sophomore year. He averaged 7.2 points per game last season on his way to Honorable Mention in both All-OIA West and All-Hawaii Division II selections.

"He's always been very active pylon, too. He's pretty much active year-round and it shows. He puts in a lot of work in the offseason and is always a busy guy that taps back into football whether it's in season or offseason. Hiki just comes from a long line of athletes in his family," Liilii said.

Younger brother, Bam, is on Na Alii's junior varsity football squad this fall. Hiki's older brother, Kame, was a standout receiver for Aiea before he graduated in 2017.

Kim Choy-Keb-Ah Lo and Na Alii (2-1) departed Oahu Tuesday for California. They will play at Palos Verdes Friday before they return home to host Moanalua in their regular-season opener on Sept. 5.
