Paul Hioki Jr. finally heeded the advice his coaches had been offering all season and it paid off handsomely for the Farrington junior Friday afternoon.

Hioki, a 5-foot-7, 155-pound right-handed pitcher, toed the rubber for the Governors in their monumental 2-1 road win over top-seeded Waianae late last week. Hioki, who goes by the nickname ‘PJ,' allowed one run on three hits and scattered four walks in a complete game.

It was the first time that Hioki, a third-year varsity player and second-year starter, went the distance in his six career starts.

"He was able to throw a complete game with no strikeouts, I think that's crazy to think about," first-year Farrington coach Dylan Takara said.

Hioki's efficiency is reflected in the numbers; He threw 41 of his 76 total pitches for strikes and faced four more batters than the minimum.

"He really did his job in pitching to contact. Throughout the season I feel like he really tried to overpower guys, just because it might be flashier, but he was able to settle down and figure out that behind him there are good players that can help him defensively, while also understanding that Waianae is aggressive by nature at the plate so he was able to change his approach and kind of adapted to what was needed," Takara said.

Hioki's gem against the Seariders in the semifinals of the OIA Division II tournament was in stark contrast to his previous outing, when he was tagged for eight runs (six earned) on five hits and lasted just 1 2/3 innings against Radford back on Apr. 5. Hioki was four batters that day and registered one strikeout.

"His approach was different for that game and I think after that he realized ‘this might not work' and then he finally listened to some of the advice from the coaches, especially (pitching) coach Shannon (Hirai), and even the players telling him to trust his defense and I think he finally bought into that and so for him to go out there and do what we all thought he could do and be successful, I think it helped boost his confidence," Takara said.

Friday's win at Waianae did not come without some hiccups along the way. Hioki got off to a bumpy start by allowing a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first inning. A few pitches later he beaned a batter and then surrendered a run on a groundball in the infield.

The Seariders put the leadoff man on base in each of the first three innings. Takara said the slow starts have hampered Hioki in the past.

"He's from that side of the island and I think he has ties to that Waianae staff, so I think initially he was kind of, not starstruck, but maybe a little bit nervous and then once he finds his groove he finds it. I think against Waialua he also started off a little bit rough, same with the Kalaheo one, but he was able to finish those games out," Takara said.

To be sure, Hioki also got his fair share of help from his teammates Friday. The Govs played error-free ball for just the second time this spring. Hioki's batterymate, Kyle Hayase-Fong, did his part by throwing out three Seariders on the base paths.

"Kyle's really, really smart, especially when it comes to situational awareness and everything like that, so when we have him behind the plate also calling pitches to help the pitchers out, he's very tremendous in that role, but we were kind of shocked he was able to throw those guys out because Waianae is known to be a little faster on the base paths, but he was able to receive the ball well, throw it down and get them out and it helped not only the team as a whole, but it helped PJ get out of some jams, too," Takara said.

Takara reiterated Hioki's diligence in making necessary adjustments on the mound, while still maintaining what makes him effective.

"As a pitcher he's very aggressive and really goes after batters. In the beginning of the season he struggled a little bit trying to find his command, but halfway into the season he started figuring it out, started changing his approach, started pitching to contact and overall whether on the mound, in the box or behind the plate, he's never willing to back down. He's a guy we can really count on. He struggled a little bit during the season, but he's always there when we need him most, so he's very clutch," Takara described.

When Hioki's not pitching, he's typically behind the plate and when he's not part of the Govs' battery, he's likely holding down third base.

"He's very good at blocking (pitches) and is also able to read the runners really well so he's able to predict when they're going to go. He's also been smarter with not throwing the ball in risky situations so he's grown in that way, too," Takara added.

Hioki bats in second in the lineup behind Thomas Nakashima – who drew five of Farrington's 15 walks against Kapolei in Saturday's championship game – largely because of his ability to put the ball in play.

"Thomas gets on kind of a lot and draws a lot of walks, so we rely on PJ heavily to try to put something hard on the ground or to the right field side, so we can move Thomas over so our third and fourth batters can bring him in, so PJ's really done a great job trying to put the ball into play and moving the runner into scoring position," Takara said.  

Against Waianae Friday afternoon, Hioki singled and scored one of two runs for the Govs' in the top of the sixth. The following day he cleared the bases with his two-out double to the gap in left center that gave his team a 4-0 cushion over the Hurricanes in the top of the second.

"He comes in clutch when we need him and even though in some instances throughout the season he might not have hit well, he moved the runner over to put them in a better position, so I think for the most part he did his job. In that case, I think he understood the situation and kind of just swung for it," Takara said.

Outside of baseball, Hioki is also a wrestler for the Govs during the winter sports season. Takara has noticed Hioki's ability to carry over some of the benefits from the wrestling mat to the baseball diamond.

"Wrestling is heavily dependent on tactics and so PJ is always looking for opponents' weaknesses and kind of picking on that kind of stuff. In baseball he may understand where the other team may fall a little flatter and so he's able to pick out and work on those things. Also, the overall grit that comes from being on a mat by yourself and not necessarily fighting for your life, but having to work a little bit harder and so I think he's been able to bring that over to the baseball field as well," Takara surmised.

Farrington's 8-5 win over Kapolei Saturday was the culmination of a year-long turnaround that saw the Govs ascend from an 0-12 record in 2024 – albeit in Division I -- to a 9-2-1 mark this spring. It is just the second OIA baseball championship in program history, the only other coming in 2018 under coach Eric Tokunaga.

Takara, a former assistant under Tokunaga, inherited a veteran-laden squad that includes 11 seniors.

"Overall, all of them are very hard workers and I'm just very proud of their commitment and their dedication to the team. I think for the most part they were very hesitant as a whole, especially for me being their coach when I was their buddy and then them finally buying into what me and all the other coaches have been saying, so I'm just proud of the success they've been able to accomplish," Takara said.

Hioki and the Govs will wrap up their season next week as they take part in the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA D2 State Championships, May 8-10 at Les Murakami Stadium. The bracket for the eight-team tournament is expected to be revealed later this week.
