Waianae, Campbell advance to OIA flag football quarterfinals

KALIHI - Kaimuki turned in the play of the night, but it came too little, too late.

The Bulldogs executed a 56-yard hook-and-lateral play in the final seconds of a 25-6 loss to Waianae in the first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Associations girls flag football 12-team tournament Monday night at Skippa Diaz Stadium at Kusunoko Field.

Quarterback Taimane Nahinu threw a 5-yard pass to Marcia Kauvaka, who made a lateral tos to Sonja Amazons, who ran 51 yards to the end zone to complete the 56-yard play to end the game.

Meanwhile, the Seariders got a combined 177 passing yards from Angel Medeiros and Kawena-Lynn Kaluna to advance to Tuesday's quarterfinals against Mililani, 5:30 p.m. at Castle in the first game of a doubleheader. In the nightcap, Campbell a 40-0 winner against McKinley, will face host Castle at 7 p.m.

Mederios started and played the first half, completing 8 of 12 passes for 85 yards. Kaluna began the second half, completing 11 of 13 passes for 92 yards. She passed for two TDs and rushed for another.

The score wasn't indicative of the game. After a scoreless first quarter, Medeiros got the Seariders going with a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter to give the Seariders a 7-0 lead at the half.

"It's always tight at the beginning of the first quarter," Waianae coach Kenneth Joseph said. "A lot of these girls get the jitters out, then settle down."

The Seariders settled down in the second half behind Kaluna, who rushed for a TD and threw TD passes of 19 yards to Madison Rodrigues and 25 yards to Dazmin Koa-Balles.

Jazlyn Oliveiros registered three sacks for the Seariders' defense.

In the earlier game, Maya Gonsalves passed for five touchdowns and 148 yards in Campbell's 40-0 win. Jaynalyn Sotelo had two TD catches and returned an interception 40 yards to the McKinley 2. She has six TDs on the season, four by receiving and two by interception returns.
