Damien blanks PAC-5 to cap regular season slate with third straight win

Damien broke up a five inning stalemale with two runs in the final two innings to post a 4-0 win over PAC-5, helping the Monarchs close out the regular season with three straight wins.

Max Detrinis and Sam Cezar-Kanakaole combined on a three-hitter, outdueling the Wolfpack's Ryden Toyama, who went six innings and allowed just one earned run.

The top of sixth for Damien started off with a double by Kona Begonia, and Detrinis was walked intentionally, setting up Makoa Freitas with two runners and no outs. Freitas' line drive was mishandled, allowing one run to score, and Nai Begonia added a second run a batter later on a line drive single to left.

Two more runs came across in the top of the seventh, both with two outs, as Freitas drew a bases loaded walk to bring home one run and Nai Begonia was able to come home with the fourth run for the Monarchs on a fielder's choice.

Those four runs proved more than enough for Cezar-Kanakaole, who pitched the final three innings and allowed just a single hit, striking out one to earn the victory. Detrinis pitched four strong innings, allowing just two hits, walking two and striking out one.

Kona Begonia had the lone extra base hit of the contest, and Nai Begonia and Detrinis were the only batters to collect multiple hits.

Damien will remain idle until the start of the HHSAA Division II tournament as the ILH's lone representative, while PAC-5 will begin play in the ILH double elimination tournament on Sat, April 19.
