Chaseten Rice has been a study in consistency over his three seasons on the Waianae baseball team. 

Rice, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed pitcher and corner infielder, made an impact right away when he first joined the Seariders as a sophomore. With each passing year he has further fine-tuned his craft and is now in the midst of a stellar senior season. 

To be sure, Rice is one of the primary reasons Waianae is undefeated at 7-0 and sits in sole possession of first place in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II standings with one week remaining in the regular season. 

During his time in the program, Rice has compiled a 13-1 pitching record with one save. In 94 2/3 career innings pitched, he has allowed only 29 earned runs on 66 hits with 113 strikeouts against 30 walks. Rice owns a career 2.15 earned run average. 

"I don't think he's pitched a bad game for us the past three years," Waianae coach Ben McQuown said. "He just goes out there and gives us a chance to win and that's the kind of guy you want out there on the mound as much as possible."

The lone loss in Rice's career ledger came in his freshman year. Aside from that outing, Rice went 5-0 that season. He posted a 3.94 ERA in his debut season and helped the Seariders to a third-place finish in the OIA tournament and a fourth-place showing at states. 

The following year saw Rice put together a 5-0 pitching record with a 1.39 ERA while Waianae captured its first league title since 2017. 

Rice earned All-OIA D2 first team honors in each of his first two seasons. As a sophomore he was named to the All-Hawaii D2 second team as a utility player. He received first team All-Hawaii distinction as a pitcher last season. 

"He just brings that number one starter mentality and every time he goes on the mound I just have full confidence in him. He's that steady guy we can always rely on whenever he goes on the mound," McQuown said. 

McQuown has turned to Rice in big games a number of times over the years. He started the state tournament opener for the Seariders in each of the past two seasons. As a sophomore Rice threw a complete-game five-hitter in a win over Kamehameha-Hawaii. He scattered seven hits with six strikeouts and one walk to shut out Konawaena in another complete game to put Waianae in the state semifinals a year ago. 

"I think there's a lot of pressure on him. We expect him to do well and keep us in the game, so for him to handle that pressure and succeed is unbelievable. As a pitcher you're always going to have bad days, but he hasn't shown that. There's been a lot of pressure put on this kid, but he wants the ball in big time games and he's gonna get it; He doesn't shy away from the pressure and he kind of thrives off that," McQuown said. 

Rice utilizes four different pitches in his repertoire. He relies heavily on his fastball and change-up while mixing in a slider/curve and a splitter. His change-up is, by far, his most polished pitch. 

"He throws the splitter three, maybe four times a game. It's mostly the fastball and change-up and then the slider/curve keeps them off balance, but the change-up is the strikeout pitch. In my opinion he probably has the best change-up in the state," McQuown said. 

McQuown scheduled a rigorous preseason slate that saw Rice more than hold his own against some of the state's top Division I squads. Rice tossed four scoreless innings against Maui High and also went four frames against Mililani, when he allowed just two runs. 

"He can compete against the better teams," McQuown said. 

When Rice is not pitching, he's typically manning third base. He moved over to to the hot corner after holding down first base as a sophomore.

"His junior year he said he wanted to play third base and he's really developed into a solid third baseman for us. It also allowed us to leave our first baseman there, Rico Gazelle, because he can pick it as good as anyone, but Chaseten has worked hard it and kept improving, kept working at it and he's been a pretty solid, steady guy out there for us," McQuown said. 

Rice owns a career .308 batting average (33 for 107) with 28 RBI and 36 runs scored while primarily batting third or fourth in the lineup. He has drawn 31 walks and stolen 14 bases. 

"He's always going to be a threat. Although he's not really putting up the numbers we'd like this year, in big situations he comes up with the big hit and that's the kind of guy you want at the plate. He's someone that we depend on and hopefully he can turn it on going into the playoffs. He's probably our best player, no doubt about it," McQuown said. 

Rice is batting a modest .238 this spring. He had a five-game hit streak come to an end Friday against Kapolei, but he more than made up for it on the mound, where he logged nine scoreless innings. Rice registered 11 strikeouts against two walks and four hits allowed. 

Rice fired 77 of his 111 total pitches for strikes. He overcame five hit batsmen and one wild pitch for his second straight scoreless outing. Perhaps most stunning, Rice did it on just one full day of rest after he threw three no-hit innings in relief to get the save in a 3-2 win over Farrington Wednesday afternoon. 

"That's what impressed me the most is that he threw 57 pitches on Wednesday and then came back and pitched nine innings on Friday — that's almost 180 pitches in three days," McQuown said. 

Rice worked through several jams — he picked off a baserunner after giving up a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh inning — but also got a boost from his batterymate Kyson Rosa, who mowed down two runners caught stealing. 

"For some reason he kind of beans a lot of batters, that's kind of been the way he's been since his sophomore year. He'll get ahead of hitters 0-2 or 1-2 and then next pitch, bean ‘em in the leg. Sometimes he losses command but comes back next pitch with ground ball, double play, so there's some ups and downs, but it's more ups than downs. I mean he'll give up those walks and hit by pitches, but you can't really argue with the results because he gets out of jams and his ERA is sub-one right now, so I can't complain too much" McQuown quipped. 

Friday's appearance was Rice's longest outing of his career. The 11 strikeouts he notched were also the most he's racked up in a game. 

The Seariders finally broke through with a pair of runs in the top of the 10th, then held off a Hurricanes' rally in the final half-inning to seal the win. 

"He showed up against Kapolei. I mean, it was zero-zero for a long time, nobody could score. We had trouble scoring — we had a hard time even hitting the ball — but he did his job, kept us in the game for nine innings and luckily we were able to come out with a win and a big part of it was because of him, that's for sure," McQuown said. 

Waianae's victory broke a tie with Kapolei for first place in the OIA D2 standings and handed the ‘Canes their first defeat of the season. 

"Before the game against Farrington on Wednesday, we hadn't really been in any close games, so I think the fact that we showed that we can win those tight games was big for us and is a real good confidence booster going into the playoffs because we know we'll be in tight games and will face good pitchers where we might only get four, five hits a game, but now we know we can win those close games," McQuown said. 

Rice, who is 3-0 on the year with 0.52 ERA, is committed to play next year at Tabor College, an NAIA school in Kansas, with the hopes of continuing his education and baseball career at a higher level in the future. 

"Hopefully he does well there, puts up some good numbers and a D1 school comes knocking because I'm sure he can play at that level," McQuown expressed. 

The coach noted that while Rice's contributions to the Seasiders have been significant, so have those of his mother Ray, who fills the role of team mom. 

"I don't know where our program would be without her. She takes care of all the stuff in the background with parents and uniforms, so as much as I love have Chaseten on the team, I don't know where we would be without his mom," McQuown added. 

Rice and the Seasiders (7-0) will host Waialua Wednesday before they close out the regular season at Radford on Apr. 16.
