Campbell squeezes past Maui, Kamehameha routs Moanalua to set up semifinal pairing

In a battle of the Sabers, it was Campbell who clawed their way to the semifinals.

A low scoring affair throughout saw Campbell break free in the third quarter, using a 12-4 scoring burst to close out the quarter leading 31-24. Maui battled back to tie the game at 33-all, as a layup by Naiara Bal capped a 9-2 burst of its own.

Cayden Parado hit a huge three at the 3:03 mark of the fourth to push Campbell back ahead 36-33, a shot that would ultimately be the final basket scored in the contest.

Jaynalyn Sotelo led Campbell with 11 points, Parado had nine and Aiesha Deweever added eight in the victory, while Bal had a game high 15 and Darsee Seegmiller eight in defeat.

Both teams had the same number of field goals (14) and threes (3) and Maui attempted one less shot (42 to 43) but had one more three-pointer attempted (10 to 9).

Campbell did hold a decided edge in the rebounding department, where it had 36 to Maui's 23, led by Sotelo's 10.

The first quarterfinal of the night at Kamehameha saw the top-ranked Warriors post a wire-to-wire win over Moanalua, 70-25.

Nihoa Dunn and Makenzie Alapai combined for 27 points to lead the way for the ILH champions, who hit seven threes as team and saw every player who checked into the contest score a basket.

The Warriors led 19-4 after the first and 39-6 at halftime.

Moanalua, who were playing without leading scorer Rheana Nobleza, shot just 9 of 39 from the field and 1 of 9 from three. Serenity Tacgere led Na Menehune with 10 points and seven boards.
