ScoringLive photo illustrationZayden Alviar-Costa's Friday night was representative of how the Campbell football team's evening went.
The senior wideout for the Sabers dropped the first pass that he was targeted on in his team's OIA Open Division semifinal game against Kapolei, but he went to put together a stellar performance the rest of the way.
Alviar-Costa, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound second-year starter, wound up on the receiving end of four touchdown passes from quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele and playing a big part in the Sabers' thrilling 49-43 win over the Hurricanes.
"He had a drop and we told him at the time, ‘That is not you at all, refocus yourself and get us going,' which he did — which he really did well" Campbell coach Darren Johnson said.
Alviar-Costa went on to haul in eight passes after the drop. He scored two touchdowns in each half and finished with a career-high of 174 receiving yards to help the Sabers rally from a 26-point second-quarter deficit.
"It was so important that he had that kind of a game because we needed it. We weren't playing the kind of football we should have been playing, but they hung in there and everything came together at the right time so that we could get back in the game," Johnson said.
Alviar-Costa got Campbell on the board one play into the second quarter. Sagapolutele threw a deep ball down the right sideline and Alviar-Costa adjusted his route before he pulled down the pass and completed the 44-yard touchdown.
After Kapolei took its largest lead of the game at 33-7, Sagapolutele found Alviar-Costa on a 4-yard TD pass on a fade to the back right pylon.
The pair re-connected on their third scoring pass five seconds into the fourth quarter. On first-and-goal, Alviar-Costa went up to get Sagapolutele's 7-yard TD pass in the back of the end zone to cut Kapolei's lead to 36-32.
The Hurricanes held a 43-34 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but Sagapolutele kept his team within striking distance after he perfectly placed a 25-yard TD pass into the hands of Alviar-Costa, who beat his defender on the play.
"He's a guy that can run, he goes after the ball, he's got great hands and he's got ice in his veins," John described. "He's just someone you love to be around. Doesn't talk a lot of smack, just focuses on his task."
Johnson said that Alviar-Costa is his own harshest critic.
"He's so hard on himself at times, but he can bounce back. He's a tough kid," Johnson said.
As a team captain this fall, Alviar-Costa not only holds himself accountable, but does the same for his teammates.
"He brings great leadership. He's fast as hell but he's always leading by example. He's got a great IQ, period. He's got great grades in the classroom, is never a problem and is always trying to do the right thing. He's always calling you on your stupidity," Johnson said.
Friday marked the fifth game this season that Alviar-Costa went over 100 yards receiving. He recorded seven catches for 142 yards and a touchdown against Farrington and had six grabs for 116 yards and two TDs against Mililani three weeks later.
Through Campbell's first nine games, Alviar-Costa has 51 receptions for an Open Division-best 973 yards. He is averaging 19.1 yards per catch and 108.1 receiving yards per game. Alviar-Costa has scored 13 total touchdowns, including a pair of kickoff returns for scores.
"He's doing such an awesome job. You can put this in there, I'm waiting for the University of Hawaii to offer him (a scholarship). He's a local boy that could really help their program. He's a kid that would love to stay home and play at the next level. He would have grades, he would work hard, he would do all the things he needs to do — and he can (really) run," Johnson stated.
On the Sabers' team roster, Alviar-Costa's listed position is "athlete," a nod to his versatility.
"He can play anywhere we wanted him to play. He can play defensive if we wanted him. He plays slot or wide receiver — we move him around — and if we really need him, he can play (defensive back). He can return kicks and he can also return punts and he's a great teammate, too. The younger kids really look up to him and he's a social butterfly. He gets along with everybody and is just a great kid."" Johnson said.
Along with Alviar-Costa's big night, fellow receiver Rusten Abang-Perez had a productive evening of his own with 13 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Their efforts were magnified with starting right wideout Tyson Ball (20 receptions, 209 yards, 7 TDs) out due to an injury.
"It's a loss and we had to move people around and we've been in that (semifinal) game before but not (while) top seeded. We had a bad first half, but we didn't yell at the kids at the half. We expressed the point that they gotta go back and have fun. The game has to be fun. They had to stop trying not to lose and just win," Johnson said.
The Sabers claimed their only lead of the night when Sagapolutele connected with Shaison Kupukaa for a 13-yard TD pass with 2:08 remaining. They converted the ensuing two-point conversion and then turned the Hurricanes over on downs and ran out the clock to complete the comeback.
"I think that it was a good wake-up call and hopefully we show up and play good football and things like that where Zayden, along other captains, bring that leadership and really show that togetherness that has got us here," Johnson said.
Alviar-Costa and the top-ranked Sabers (9-0) will play for their first OIA Open Division championship Friday when they face No. 2 Kahuku (7-4) at Farrington's Edward ‘Skippa' Diaz Stadium at Kusunoki Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

To be where Tiahna Aldegeur found herself Saturday was unthinkable just a year ago.
Aldegeur, a sophomore setter for the state champion Kamehameha girls volleyball team, shined while in the middle of the action during last week's New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I tournament. It was quite the contrast from her perspective on the 2023 final.
"I was actually sick at home, watching on TV," recalled Aldeguer, a 5-foot-7 first-year starter for the now-reigning two-time state champion Warriors, who finished the year with a 12-6 record that was capped by Saturday night's four-set win over top-seeded Iolani in the title match.
Aldegeur was a key cog in what was just Kamehameha's second win over the Raiders in seven tries this year. She tallied 52 assists and came up with 16 digs. Aldegeur's set distribution helped five different Warriors finish with at least seven kills, including three hitters in double digits.
"She's come a long way and for us, as we continued to figure out our best way to figure out the puzzle of Iolani, she was key in that," Kamehameha coach Chris Blake said.
When Blake's starting setter from a year ago, Emma Lilo, graduated in the spring, it left a void in the Warriors' lineup. They tried a number of different rotations — including a six-hitter, two-setter look — until Aldegeur took over the starting job during the ILH tournament early last month.
"Tiahna was one of the setters we were looking at so she did get some reps in the back row. As we continued to figure out how we would perform best we tried a few other things, went with another setter for a bit, then made a change with her in our second-round match with Punahou," Blake said.
In the midst of a four-set win over the Buffanblu on Oct. 9, Aldegeur ascended to become the team's starting setter in a five-hitter, one-setter offense.
"She brought a different look and a different skillset that allowed us to solidify some things and she continued to work and improve and was able to be success as we continued our season," Blake said.
Just three days after the Punahou match, Kamehameha took the first set off of Iolani but lost the next three. Even in the loss, Aldegeur displayed some moxie, Blake recalled.
"She did some good things there and then we came back and played Mid-Pacific and won in four (sets) and I think all those opportunities to do things and putting pressure on herself helped her get ready for (states)," Blake said.
When the Warriors and Raiders met at Iolani's lower gym on Oct. 17, the visitors fought their way to a five-set win. It was the Raiders' lone off of the season prior to Saturday night's state final.
"Iolani was packed and it was a great environment for volleyball and she pretty much kept her composure and part of her ability to be steady and embracing the calm throughout the chaos was a key for her to be able to make the right decisions at the right time," Blake said.
The road win helped Kamehameha seal the ILH second-round title and force a playoff for the overall league championship. Iolani won the rematch two days later in four sets, which meant the Warriors would have to win four matches in six days if they were to repeat as state champions.
They did just that. In a rout of Kamehameha in Monday's play-in round, Aldegeur tallied 26 assists, three digs, three aces, two kills and one-half block. She racked up 30 assists, eight digs, three aces, three kills and one-half block in Thursday's quarterfinal sweep of third-seeded Baldwin. The following night Aldegeur registered 36 assists, seven digs and three block assists in a semifinal sweep of No. 2 seed Moanalua.
Aldegeur was one of four Warriors named to the all-tournament team. She averaged 11.1 assists per set last week.
"She did an exceptional job. The game plan we put in defensively was pretty tactical and it allowed us to have many more opportunities on offense and nothing is ever perfect, but she did an exceptional job of distributing and following through with her offensive plan," Blake said.
In Saturday's title match, Aldegeur had just one setting error in 145 attempts. Iolani coach Kainoa Obrey spoke highly of Aldegeur's play and noted her role in Kamehameha's late-season improvements.
"Throughout the season they've kind of been moving some pieces around, but I thought their setter did a really good job for them. They made that change the last couple weeks going into the (ILH) tournament and it was a big help for them," Obrey said. "They got some consistency, got some reliability out of her, I mean, that kid played really well for them. In my opinion that kid made that team a whole lot better for the last two weeks, for sure."
Aldegeur was quick to pass the praise to her teammates, including junior setter Shaye Teves.
"It was just about doing it and who can just do it and putting (egos) aside. I think my performance was heavily based on my teammates because without them and their constant support through the whole thing, because we were always going up and down but we had each other's (backs) and we just play for each other. I don't feel like I deserve as much credit because it serious is my team," Aldegeur said.
Blake said that whether Aldegeur was in the starting lineup or on the scout team, she was "a sponge" and always eager to improve.
"We have a lot of very talented players, including at her position, and for her to understand that and be a consummate teammate is a testament to her. We always talk about battling and improving, which creates a pretty dynamic and competitive environment in our gym and whether she was on the starting side, or our ‘machine' side, as we call it, she was getting good, competitive reps and when we made that switch she was able to be productive as we needed her to be as moved toward the last third of the season," Blake said.
After watching the television broadcast of Kamehameha's 2023 state championship win over Punahou from home, Aldegeur was still in a state of shock in the aftermath of Saturday night's successful title defense.
"It's exciting. I actually can't believe it at all. Last year I did not think I would be starting and playing and winning a state championship, but yeah, I can't believe it," Aldegeur said.
The Warriors have won four of the last five Division I state championships and now own a record 25 titles since the inception of the state tournament in 1969.
