Kapolei to take on top seed Iolani in Division I semifinals

Top-seed Iolani registered a straight set sweep of Kahuku, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21, while Kapolei needed four sets to topple fourth seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii, 25-19, 24-26, 25-15, 25-16, setting up one semifinal pairing of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I Girls Volleyball Championships.

Kapolei got 15 kills and 17 digs, both match-highs, from Leila Paraoan, and Anny Scott fell just one kill short of a triple-double, notching nine kills, 15 assists and 11 digs to go along with two aces.

The Hurricanes hit just .188 in the match, but the Warriors only managed a .028 clip.

Kamehameha-Hawaii battled in the second set, trailing by three late in the set, but scored five straight points to take the lead at 24-23 before allowing three consecutive unforced errors to give the set to the Hurricanes.

Kapolei led sets three and four nearly wire-to-wire, trailing ever so briefly on the opening point of the fourth, a kill by Madison-Rose Marsh.

In the early quarterfinal, Chalei Reid had a match-high 17 kills for the Red Raiders, but Poema Kalama-Kingma and Taimane Ainuu both reached double-figures in kills to pace the Raiders, hitting .272 as a team compared to .181 for Kahuku.

Kahuku actually had more total blocks (9 to 6) but Iolani had twice as many aces (6 to 3).

All three sets for tightly contested until the closing points of each, where Iolani pulled ahead late to the win in each.

In set one, the score was tied at 14-all but the Raiders went on a 9-1 spurt to seize control, then notched three of the final four points capped off by a Georgie Lee kill to end it.

Set two was knotted up at 17-all when Iolani rode an 8-2 advantage to make it two sets to none, as a Callie Pieper kill gave the Raiders the decided advantage.

Finally in set three, Kahuku led 21-10 before five straight Iolani points ended the match, four of them unforced errors on the Red Raiders.

Pieper hit .353, a team-high, with seven kills, 11 digs, a block and an ace. Only Reid hit for a higher percentage (.371).
