Roosevelt rolls past Waialua to finish league slate on three-game streak

Led by a three TD evening by running back Shaedon Sexton and a defensive gem, Roosevelt rolled to a 48-3 win over Waialua, ts third straight, to close out the regular season.

Sexton, who had 49 yards on 14 carries, posted a multi-score contest for the second time this season and also extended his scoring streak to three games.

The Rough Riders put points up via its run game, but much of that was set up by success through the air, in particular Jahsiah Souza-Armstead who racked up nine catches for 172 yards and added a 36 yard scoring play as well.

Both marks were season-highs for Souza-Armstead, and mimics his sophomore campaign a season ago, where he broke out to post a 122 yard, two score performance in a nail-biting win against Kaiser on Oct. 27.

Ioane Kamanao completed 19 of 31 passes for 261 yards, a season-high for the junior quarterback, and leading receiver Keawe Davis caught six passes for 45 yards and a score.

Waialua got on the board in the final minute of the half on a 33 yard field goal by Kaies Demello to make it 14-3, marking the first score allowed by the Rough Riders' defense in nearly six quarters of play.

That defensive display continued through the second half, where the Bulldogs did not score a point, making it now eight quarters without allowing a trip to the end zone by an opponent.

What's more the defense helped its own cause adding a 35 yard fumble return for a score by Dayten Tilton to close out the scoring in the fourth.

By the numbers, Roosevelt held Waialua to just 51 yards of total offense, which included three interceptions.

Both Roosevelt and Castle completed their regular seasons with 6-1 records, and Kaiser can finish 6-1 as well with a win over McKinley Saturday, a team they beat in its season opener, 56-7, creating a logjam atop the OIA Division II standings.

Those same standings could get even more complex with a win Saturday for Kalani over Kaimuki, which would result in another three-way tie, this one for the final playoff berth.
