Day two of HIADA conference ends with awards dinner

KEAUHOU, Hawaii — After deliberating over proposals and new measures, several coaches and administrators received awards for their many years of services on day two of the 63rd annual Hawaii Interscholastic Athletic Director Association conference Wednesday night at the Outrigger Kona Resort and Spa at Keauhou Bay.

Among those honored included outgoing Keaau baseball coach Herb Yasuhara and outgoing Aiea football coach Wendell Say. Yasuhara coached multiple sports at a number of schools during his 48-year coaching career while Say spent 44 years at Aiea with 32 of them being the head man.

Before the evening festivities, athletic directors and administrators split into four groups, with each of the state's five leagues represented in each group. On Tuesday afternoon the groups conducted straw polls on each of the proposals they were assigned.

The results of the straw pole voting of the 40 measures were revealed in a general assembly on Wednesday. The groups then later casted binding votes in a closed door meeting later in the day.

Proposals that pass out of committee will be forwarded to the HIADA general assembly for another round of voting Thursday morning.

Some measures that saw overwhelming support following Tuesday's straw pole related to wrestling. This included proposals to establish a certified low weight class and expanding the seeding of the wrestlers beyond the top eight in their respective weight classes.

Another area that had outstanding support related to a pair of proposals submitted by the HHSAA to delay the scheduled host rotation in Division II baseball and softball and keep it on Oahu for the following year. Hawaii Island and Maui were originally slated to host those two tournaments respectively.
