Remily's gem carries Spartans past Owls to snap 3-game skid

Jacob Remily struck out eight batters, walked two and allowed two runs on two hits in a near-complete game to lead Maryknoll to a 5-2 win over No. 7 Mid-Pacific in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game at Damon Field Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-5 in the ILH Division I standings, while the Owls dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season to fall to 4-3.

Remily held Mid-Pacific to a season-low two hits and gave up just one earned run to run his record to 2-1 on the year. He lowered his earned run average to 3.76.

Maryknoll never trailed and took the lead with a three-run third inning.

Keegan Kahalehoe and Alika Balberbi got on base with consecutive one-out singles off of Owls' starting pitcher Noah Kubo. Kahalehoe stole third base then took home on a wild pitch to open the scoring. Allin Yap reached on an error, which allowed Balberdi to plate the second run of the inning. Tanner Fujino, who drew a walk to get aboard, eventually came around to score on a Kubo wild pitch.

Mid-Pacific pushed across a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, when Chandler Murray score on an RBI-sacrifice fly off the batt of Ethan Yonemura. Two batters later, Max Taniguchi crossed the plate on a passed ball.

It was as close as the Owls would get.

Maryknoll added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings for insurance. Kaui Kekauoha's two-out single brought Luke Swartman home in the top of the sixth and Fujino smacked a solo home run over the fence in left field with one out in the Maryknoll seventh to close out the scoring.

Remily threw 114 pitches before he gave way to reliever Jordan Lowery, who struck out the final batter to finish the game.

Kubo took the loss after he allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits with two strikeouts and two walks over three innings of work. Coen Goeas struck out four, walked one and surrendered two runs on three hits over three innings of relief.

Mid-Pacific was coming off of a 5-1 loss to top-ranked Kamehameha Thursday afternoon. It will look to rebound Tuesday afternoon against Damien (3-4).

Maryknoll will take on PAC-5 (1-5) Tuesday at Mike Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai.

Saturday's game was the second meeting between the teams this season. The Owls came away with a 5-1 win over the Spartans back on March 21.
