MANOA — The University of Hawaii football came out on the wrong side of a 63-10 loss to Vanderbilt in the first game under coach Timmy Chang Saturday night. 

A sellout crowd of 9,346 fans at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletic Complex saw the Rainbow Warriors (0-1) take an early lead against the Commodores (1-0), but allow 42 second-half points to drop their first season opener since 2014. 

Hawaii marched 75 yards in eight plays to open the game, capped by Dedrick Parson's 37-yard touchdown run. On the scoring play, Parson took the handoff from quarterback Brayden Schager and turned on the jets around left end on his way to the end zone. 

Vanderbilt pulled even on Mike Wright's 1-yard touchdown pass to Will Sheppard with 36 seconds left in the first quarter. It went ahead on UH's very next play from scrimmage, when Parson fumbled and Anfernee Orji scored on a 28-yard scoop and score with 21 seconds remaining. 

The Rainbow Warriors got a 40-yard Matthew Shipley field goal to cap a 12-play, 53-yard drive with 10:24 left in the second quarter, but Vandy scored 49 unanswered points — including 35 in the third quarter — to pull away. 

Parson finished with 82 yards on 13 carries, while Jonah Panoke hauled in seven catches for a game-high 101 yards. Schager started the game and played parts of the fourth quarter; He finished 18-of-35 passing for 161 yards. Pittsburgh-transfer Joey Yellen played most of the second half and completed 10 of his 20 passes for 89 yards. 

Hawaii posted 358 yards of total offense, but were stung by a pair of fumbles that were returned by the Commodore defense for touchdowns. 

Vanderbilt ran for 404 of its 601 total yards. Quarterback Mike Wright threw a pair of touchdown passes — both to Sheppard — and ran in two other scores, including an 87-yard touchdown run. Wright completed 13 of his 21 pass attempts for 146 yards without an interception and ran for 163 yards on 13 carries. 

"This first game I know these guys were excited to play. Their intentions were in the right place and they played pretty good coming out the gate and (over) time things started to happen and the result is what it is and so for me it's back to the drawing board," said Chang, the first-year UH coach. 

Hawaii hosts Western Kentucky next Saturday, 6 p.m. at the Ching Athletic Complex.

The Hilltoppers (1-0) defeated Austin Peay, 38-27, in their season opener Saturday.
