Kailua rolls past Roosevelt to notch fifth straight victory

Kailua got out front and did not look back as they surfed to their fifth straight win of the season, 7-0, over Roosevelt at Kailua High School Wednesday.

Makai Miyamoto had three hits for Kailua, but Kaimana Burgo and Orion Medeiros both led Kailua with two runs apiece. In addition, pitcher Mikey Hanano contributed nine strikeouts and two stolen bases in the victory.

"We knew Mikey could hold them down – he was an animal on the mound," Medeiros said of Hanano's nine strikeouts.

Austin Taniguchi was the only player to log anything for Roosevelt. He logged a hit and a double in the loss.

Roosevelt and Kailua were evenly matched through the first two innings, but neither team scored.

In the third inning, Kailua got on the board with three runs, which put the pressure on Roosevelt to catch up. Kailua was able to weather every challenge from Roosevelt though.

"We just felt better going into it," Medeiros said. "We prepared a lot throughout this week, and we really need this win."

Roosevelt tried everything, but all they got was frustrated. Taniguchi's double was the closest they could get to scoring a run.

After a scoreless fourth inning for both teams, Kailua came to life with another run in the fifth inning to make it 4-0. Roosevelt's chances of winning were beginning to fade.

"It was all a matter of getting runners on base and just bringing them in," Medeiros added.

For Roosevelt, the sixth inning got no better, and Kailua proved to have nerves of steel.

Kailua added three more runs to make it 7-0, and Roosevelt just did not have an answer. Roosevelt ended up scoreless again in that sixth inning.

Kailua held Roosevelt scoreless again in the seventh inning, and that was all she wrote.

Overall, in the OIA, Kailua improves to 7-2-0 in 2022 and Roosevelt falls to 5-5-0. Kailua heads on the road to Kahala Field against the Kalani Falcons, while Roosevelt journeys to Moanalua (5-5-0) next.

Both teams will swing the bats again on Saturday, Apr. 9 at 11 a.m. HST.
