KAKAAKO—No. 5 Kahuku pulled away late in the fourth quarter from fourth seeded Baldwin in the quarterfinals, 64-53, at McKinley's Student Council Gymnasium Wednesday.

The Red Raiders starters combined to score 63 of the team's 64 points led by Shon Reid's 18. Oscar Cheng had a double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds, Amari Westmoreland-Vendiola added 13, Lokana Enos with 10 and Robbie Sauvao rounded out the scoring with nine.

"I was looking to be aggressive and get fouled a lot down there and I'm looking to go up strong and get the offense going," Cheng said.

Kahuku advances to face top-seed and No. 1 Kamehameha-Kapalama at the Stan Sheriff Center at 7 p.m.

"It feels good, I haven't made it there since freshman year," Reid said.

Baldwin led after the first quarter and opened up the second quarter on a 6-0 run to force a quick Kahuku timeout. Four Bears scored in double figures led by Isaiah Richards' 14 points off of four 3-pointers, Holden Ioanis and Kuikawa Ross with 11 each and Hudson Yarbrough with 10 off the bench.

Transition baskets helped Kahuku get back into the game to get within one and tied the game at 20 following Loren Nakauciri's free throw. Quintan Akaka (seven points) hit a baseline jumper before Enos floated up a shot from the free throw line to beat the buzzer as the Bears clung on to a 24-23 halftime lead.

"That was big, that's what we've been doing all season long," Reid said of pushing the ball in transition.

Kahuku appeared to pull away momentarily after Reid's drive, but Richards cut the deficit in half with a triple to trail, 32-29. The Red Raiders led by seven with 2 minutes 30 seconds left, but Baldwin roared back with another 3-pointer from Richards and Akaka converted a field goal off a cut to trail by two. Enos and Reid scored the next four points as Kahuku led, 42-36 heading into the fourth.

"That got us going," Cheng said of scoring in transition. "Coach is like, ‘Push, push and get out in transition' and that's what got us that lead in the third quarter."

The Red Raiders led by eight until the Bears went to the free throw line and got four combined points from Ioanis and Yarbrough. Ross got a bucket to drop over Cheng to bring it within two however, Kahuku beat Baldwin for loose balls. The Red Raiders had 15 offensive rebounds and out rebounded Baldwin, 39 to 22 overall.

"That was important, you have to be on the floor for every loose ball and every possession matters at this point of the season. Free throws were big. I wasn't making my free throws but my teammates came up big," Cheng said as he was 5 for 7 from the field and 3 for 9 from the charity stripe.

Westmoreland-Vendiola split free throws but had a 3-point shot fall to put Kahuku up seven. Reid hit a baseline floater and Westmoreland-Vendiola added a layup in transition to put Kahuku up 10. The Red Raiders scored the next seven points from the charity stripe to put the game away.

"We didn't come out the way we should have, but the game is a game of runs. It was back and forth. Shon knocked down some huge free throws in the clutch and we see another day," Cheng said.

Reid was a perfect 10 for 10 and Kahuku as a team shot 21 for 31 (67 percent) overall from the free throw line while Baldwin was 16 for 20 (80 percent).

Baldwin plays Leilehua in the consolation bracket at 3 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Kamehameha-Kapalama 72, Leilehua 43

Kordel Ng led the top-seeded Warriors with 21 points and Christmas Togiai added 20 in the lopsided quarterfinal win over the Mules.

Leilehua opened up the game with a quick 9-2 lead, but the Warriors answered with a 9-2 run of their own to tie the game at 11 following EJ Kapihe's put back. There were four lead changes until Togiai knotted the game at 17 heading into the second quarter.

Leilehua trailed, 23-22 following Jordan Ke-a's 3-pointer, but the top team in the state closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run to lead, 33-22.

The run continued into the third quarter as Kamehameha went up by 17 following Kordel Ng's jumper in transition. Aviel Palmer ended the scoring drought for the Mules but the Warriors outscored Leilehua in the quarter, 23 to 7.

Despite shooting 5 for 17 (29 percent) from the free throw line overall, Kamehameha's largest lead was 32 in the final period.

Landyn Jumawan had 13 points and Palmer added 10 in the loss.
