McKinley, Kalani victorious in D2 first round
McKinley outlasted Konawaena in a five-set thriller to advance to the quarterfinals. Greg Yamamoto | SLOIA teams were victorious in the opening round of the New City Nissan Division II Girls Volleyball Championships Wednesday night.
McKinley outlasted fifth-seeded Konawaena in five sets while OIA runner-up Kalani bested La Pietra in four sets in a pair of first round matches at Kaimuki's Gymnasium.
Atiyona Mose recorded a match-high 26 digs and had 15 kills and two aces to lead the Tigers in a 25-16, 23-25, 18-25, 25-20, 15-11 win over the Wildcats. She was one of three players to finished with two aces and with 10 or more kills. The other two were Kaimana Bothelo-Patoc (15 kills, six digs) and Jada Dias (10 kills, 18 digs, two assists).
Malie Grace had a match-high 19 kills with 17 digs to lead Konawaena in the loss.
In the second first-round match at Kaimuki, Maya Hamaoka put down 24 kills with 17 digs to power the Falcons to a 23-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-16 win over the Panthers. Rayne Selhorst added 11 kills and Kailee Wakatake recorded a match-high 30 digs to round out Kalani's top contributors.
Leading the Panthers in the loss was Logan Yogi, who had a triple-double of 12 kills, 20 digs and 11 assists.
The Tigers advances to meet fourth-seeded Seabury at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Kaimuki. The Falcons will take on top-seeded Damien following the conclusion of McKinley's quarterfinal match.
