PEARL CITY — Campbell coasted past Pearl City for two sets before outlasting the Chargers in a tough final set to get the sweep, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 Wednesday night in an Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division II matchup at Pearl City High School.

Senior Brynne Hopeau-Lampitoc led the Sabers with eight kills and six aces. Fellow senior Jaysia Kalaola added four aces with sophomore Kaylin Duque getting three more.

Junior Alexis Akaka was stout in the middle with three solo blocks and two block assists.

In the second set, Campbell outlasted Pearl City in a battle of back-and-forth scoring runs with the Sabers notching runs of six, four, six and four points while the Chargers had a trio of four-point runs.

"We try to work on consistency because sometimes we're not consistent," Campbell coach Tracie Balino said. "All in all, I think we're ok with just playing one set at a time, one play at a time."

Both teams notched their first wins of the young season in straight-set victories over Leilehua (1-2) last week.

Over the past weekend, Campbell took the trip to the Big Island to play in Kamehameha's Labor Day Volleyball Classic featuring 24 teams with seven out-of-state schools.

"We learned a lot off of that tournament," Balino said. "Ours is just basically one game at at time. We know we're going three out of five, it's all about stamina and conditioning but I think I have a pretty solid bench I can count on to bring in if need to."

New for the 2019 season is all OIA regular season matches being best three-out-of-five sets.

"On the Big Island, we played back to back games and we've been taking teams to three sets. That's only three sets now and I told them, 'you can imagine if we're going three out of five,' because their stamina out there, we need a lot of work on," Balino said.

Both teams are back in action on the road next Monday with Campbell (2-0) going to Aiea (2-1) and Pearl City (1-2 )traveling to Waianae (3-0).
