Key stops lift Warriors over Raiders in PKs

KAPIOLANI — Chaylea Tome's two huge stops during the penalty kick shootout lifted Kamehameha over Iolani, as the Warriors repeated as Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I girls soccer champions.

The win also assured Kamehameha an opening round bye in next week's The Queen's Medical Center/HHSAA Girls Soccer Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex. Iolani also has a ticket punched to states regardless of the result.

Marea Lee put Iolani up 1-0 in the shootout period and Kaulana Kanno quickly countered to even the count at 1-all. Tome and Iolani keeper Musuai Isaia then proceeded to stop their opposing shooters in the second rotation to keep the count knotted.

Sasha Asselbaye's shot went just wide of the left post for Iolani, allowing Kamehameha to take a 2-1 advantage when Kalia Kalua calmly tucked the ball into the right corner.

Both shooters in the fourth rotation missed their shots, setting up a must-score situation for the Raiders.

Taylor Arakaki stepped up to take the shot for Iolani in the fifth round of the shootout, and tried to laser the ball past Tome in the right corner of the goal. Tome, however, was equal to the task, and laid out with both hands extended to deflect the ball away to end it.

"I just wanted to do as best as I could for the team, try to stop at least one, and if I could try and get another one," said Tome, who also stopped the shot of Iolani's second shooter during the PK period, Kaitlyn Uemoto.

Both teams appeared pretty content to play somewhat conservatively, especially during the first 40 minutes of play, but the second half saw Kamehameha push the tempo a bit more offensively.

"We tried to press a little bit more (in the second half) but we didn't have our legs under us so it was going to be as good as it got," said Warriors coach Melissa Moore.

A question mark for Kamehameha coming out of this contest could be the tournament availability of junior Caili Cain, who went down with an apparent knee injury at around the 95th minute of play.

Iolani played without the services of junior Kelsey Wong, but she is expected to be suited up next week.

Tuesday's match was a one-game playoff for the overall ILH crown after Kamehameha edged Iolani, 3-2, in overtime last Saturday to win the second round single-elimination tournament. Iolani was the first round winner after finishing the regular season with an 8-1-1 record.

Kamehameha defeated Punahou for last year's ILH title while Iolani went on to win its second-straight state championship.
