No. 3 Maryknoll races past No. 2 Kamehameha

MAKIKI — Jalen Tanuvasa and Mahalo Akaka scored 14 points each and Serenity Moananu added 12 to lead No. 3 Maryknoll to a 62-52 win over No. 2 Kamehameha at Clarence T.C. Ching Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The victory pulls the Spartans (17-3 overall) even with the Warriors (12-5) at 6-3 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings. Both teams trail first-place Iolani by two games with one game left in the regular season.

Maryknoll jumped out to a 7-0 lead and never trailed in the game. It shot 18 of 52 from the field and 18 of 33 at the free-throw line.

Tanuvasa made seven of 10 from the charity stripe and added six steals, five rebounds, five assists and one block. Moananu had 10 points by halftime. Aloha Akaka added seven points, nine rebounds, three steals, three blocks and an assist.

Kamehameha saw its three-game win streak snapped. It shot 16 of 44 from the field and 17 of 26 at the free-throw line. Kalina Obrey had a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in a losing effort.

Maryknoll led 25-19 at halftime and outscored the Warriors 20 to 9 in the third quarter.

The Spartans avenged a 68-64 loss at Kamehameha in their first meeting on Dec. 12. They have now won six of their last seven games.

Both teams close out the regular season Tuesday. Kamehameha will visit No. 6 Punahou, while Maryknoll will host Sacred Hearts.
