Torres-Kahapea, No. 5 Kailua hold off Kalaheo

The Kailua senior guard poured in a season-high 32 points to help No. 5 Kailua fend off district rival Kalaheo in an OIA East contest at Harry Murai Gymnasium.
Kaniala Williams added 10 points off the bench and Lydell Romero chipped in six points with 13 rebounds for the Surfriders, who improved to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in league play.
Three different players scored in double figures for Kalaheo, who suffered its second straight loss and dropped to 1-2 in the OIA Division-I East standings.
Ryan Pardini was the leading point man for the Mustangs with 20 points, five triples and five assists. Robert Thompson was also big with a double-double of 12 points and 14 rebounds and Kanoa Smith had 11 points to round out the top scorers for Kalaheo.
The Mustangs jumped out to the early advantage, with a 10-3 lead in the first quarter, but Kailua stayed patient and disciplined on defense to cut the deficit to 12-9 heading into the second period.
Ten first half turnovers by Kalaheo helped the Surfriders take control of the contest as they took a 22-17 lead at the break.
Kailua led by as many as 16 points in the second half, but sharpshooting by the Mustangs made things interesting late. However, the Surfriders never let their lead drop below nine the rest of the way as they went on to win the game.
