Riders, Owls win 2nd annual FT championship

KAKAAKO — Roosevelt boys and Mid-Pacific girls took top honors in the 2nd annual ScoringLive Free Throw Championship Saturday morning during the Great Aloha Run Health & Fitness Expo at the Neal S. Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

The Rough Riders' duo of Micah Visoria and Kapono Campos and the Owls' pair of Brilie Kovaloff and Tylee-Kanani Wong each defeated three opposing teams in a single-elimination head-to-head tournament bracket format to win $500 for their respective basketball programs.

Eight boys teams and eight girls teams participated in the event and were seeded in order of how well they shot free throws during the regular season and league play.

The top-seeded teams in each respective bracket, the Iolani girls and Punahou II boys basketball team, also earned a taco party from Taco Bell Hawaii for their free throw shooting prowess during the year.

Two representatives were chosen from each team to participate. In a change from last year's format, each player had 30 seconds to shoot as many free throws and the team with more total made shots would advance.

Roosevelt defeated Kalani in the boys bracket final, 20-14, while Mid-Pacific took down defending champion Sacred Hearts, 16-12.

The Roosevelt boys and Mid-Pacific girls then faced off against one another for grand bragging rights. The format was switched up to two back-to-back rounds, and it still took two additional overtime rounds to determine the overall champion, with the Rough Riders coming out on top, 57-56.
