Top-seeded Mid-Pacific pummels Damien, 82-30

Brilie Kovaloff poured in a game-high 23 points to lead top-seeded Mid-Pacific to a dominating 82-30 win over Damien in a quarterfinal game of the Snapple/HHSAA Division II Girls Basketball State Championships at Kalani's Earl C. Homer Gymnasium Thursday night.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu-champion Owls (12-0) shot a blistering 48.3 percent (28 of 58) from the field, including 9 of 18 from 3-point range.

Kovaloff made 5 of 6 attempts from beyond the arc and was 9 of 11 from the field. She also had five rebounds, six steals, two assists and a block.

Harley Simon notched 12 points and Ciera Kameehonua added 11 for Mid-Pacific, which will face fourth-seeded Kalani in a 7 p.m. semifinal Friday.

Damien did not have a player score in double figures. Shania Nakamura and Karly Navas led the way with seven and six points, respectively.

The Monarchs were 11 of 43 (25.6 percent) shooting from the field and committed 27 turnovers.

Mid-Pacific held a 37-7 lead after the first quarter and a 59-11 lead by halftime.

Damien will meet Kauai in a fifth-place semifinal at 5 p.m. Friday at Farrington's Richard Kitamura Gymnasium.
