Sabers shut out Mules for first win of year

WAHIAWA — The defending state champions finally looked the part as Campbell blanked Leilehua, 7-0 for its first win of the season at Fred Wright Park Friday afternoon.

Nicholas Sampson scattered seven hits across six innings and Roy Clemons drove in four runs to help the Sabers improve to 1-2 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Western Division.

"The first one is always tough to get," said Campbell coach Rory Pico. "We played some tough teams and (had) some tough losses, so this win was very important especially for our confidence."

The Mules (1-2) dropped their second straight after edging Waipahu in their season-opener.

Sampson, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, fanned five batters and walked just one.

"Our pitcher Nicky (Sampson) threw a heck of a game," Pico said. "He was able to make pitches when he needed to and was able to get out of innings."

Clemons was 2 for 3 at the plate, which included the team's first triple of the season.

"I felt like I stayed more balanced. I've been working on it in the cages," said Clemons.

Nai Cordero was charged with the loss for the Mules. He was pulled after the Sabers scored four runs in the third inning.

Christian Ontai led Leilehua at the plate, getting two doubles on three at bats.
