WAIPAHU — Tia Furuta scored twice as top-seeded Mililani cruised past unseeded Campbell, 4-0, in a Division I quarterfinal at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex Thursday night.

The Trojans improved to 13-1 with their 10th consecutive win and will play fourth-seeded Baldwin at 7 o'clock Friday night in the semifinal round of The Queen's Medical Center/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Soccer State Championships.

Despite a lopsided victory on the scoreboard, Mililani coach Ray Akiona was anything but happy with his team's execution in its first game in nearly two weeks.

"The long layoff is always going to be a concern and the fact that you had a week off and on top of that you had a (first-round) bye and so you could see it in the way we played," Akiona said. "We just didn't have that combination play, our timing was kind of off. We did practice, but it kind of shows that if you don't have those scrimmages, those games — things that keep you in tune with the rhythm — then you've really got to struggle and keep it together for as along as you can."

The unseeded Sabers held more of the possession, but failed to score for the first time in 10 games. They struggled on the defensive end to contain the Trojans' prolific scoring duo of Furuta and Kailana Kaeo.

Furuta, the reigning All-Hawaii Offensive Player of the Year, gave Mililani the lead in the very first minute. She fired a shot from about 25 yards out that bounced off goalkeeper Noelani Lum's hands and into the goal.

Akiona said Furuta's goal instantly changed the complexion of the game.

"All that apprehension that you have when you're first coming out and then getting a goal on your side, it kind of gets a little bit of that comfort in your game, but Campbell came back strong and they just continued to control it and my hats off to them," said Akiona, who had plenty of praise for the Sabers. "They really controlled the field and the game and the whole tempo and everything so hopefully we'll learn from that and we'll get ourselves a little bit more in sync."

Mililani was liberal with its substitutions, but not because of a multi-goal lead.

"I think we were trying to look for a combination that was working today so we subbed a lot because we didn't feel like we had the right people in the right places at the right times so for the coaching side that was my concern that we've got to look for something like that because you can't play like that and continue on into a tournament like that," Akiona said.

Furuta closed out the scoring in the 60th. It was her team-leading 19th and 20th goals of the year.

The Trojans also got goals from Chaylyn Navares (35th minute) and Kaeo (42nd). It was Kaeo's 19th of the season.

Akiona said he hopes that his players are not satisfied with their level of play — or their margin of victory — Thursday night.

"You can never be satisfied with that," Akiona said. "If you're playing only for the score then you don't realize that opportunity to play better as a team and to get better."

It was the second meeting between the teams this year. The Trojans defeated the Sabers, 4-1, in a regular-season game on Jan. 15.

Campbell, which placed fifth in the OIA tournament and defeated Waiakea 4-0 in an opening-round game Wednesday, fell to 10-5-1 and will play Kamehameha in a 3 p.m. fifth-place semifinal Friday.

Mililani, which won its fourth state title last year and captured its 15th Oahu Interscholastic Association crown two weeks ago, had a first-round bye Wednesday.
