Waipahu rights the ship against Radford, 67-54

Host Waipahu got back in the win column and kept its postseason aspirations alive with a 67-54 Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division win over Radford Wednesday night.

Point guard Airon Castanenda had his best game of the regular season and scored 18 points and Jasper Sebastian finished with a season-high 16 points to help the Marauders improve to 2-5 in league play.

The win momentarily puts Waipahu in second place of the OIA Division II West standings ahead of Nanakuli and Waialua, who are each 2-6. The top three teams in the OIA D2 West make it into the league's six-team playoffs.

"It feels good to be back in the win column," said Waipahu coach Mike Sana. "We're looking forward to the next couple of games. We got three more, two of which are at home. Hopefully we can finish strong heading into the playoffs."

It was the Marauders' first win of league play where they had their full roster. With posts Elijah Taimatuia and Dallas Nagaseu back from playing in the Junior Prep Sports Paradise Football Classic, Waipahu was able to limit second chance opportunities for Radford.

"To have them back brings a big presence on the court," Sana said. "I'm not going to say it all revolves around them, but they make a big difference and it's a shot of confidence having them controlling the boards."

Cameron Copeland and Sean Musrasrik each had 11 points to lead Radford, who dropped to 3-4 in the OIA West.

Waipahu was able to break away from a 16-all first quarter with an 8-0 run to begin the second period. The Marauders were able to hold the Rams to five points in the second quarter to take a 29-21 lead at the break.

The Rams cut the Marauders' lead to three, 44-41 heading into the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback and dropped their second straight game. Castaneda scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter to help Waipahu put Radford away.
