Campbell blows by Waipahu in the second half, 59-41

Campbell used a 18-7 third quarter advantage to top visiting Waipahu, 59-41 in an Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division contest Monday night.

The Sabers saw four players score in double figures to pick up their third consecutive win to improve to 4-1 in league play. The Marauders dropped to 0-4.

Senior guard Cydney Curran knocked down her first four shot attempts and finished with 16 points. Gieani Balino added 13 and Danielle Silva and post Kimberlee Ung had 10 points apiece.

Waipahu held early leads of 4-2 and 6-4 before Campbell surged ahead to take the lead for good, 12-9. The Sabers' man defense and half court trapping sets forced a handful of Waipahu turnovers that helped spur a 9-0 first half run for the home team.

Campbell led 21-9 at the 5:14 mark of the second stanza, but the Marauders battled back to trail by single digits at the half, 24-18.

Shannon Mailos, who scored a season-high 16 points in the loss, scored the first three points of the third quarter to make it a one possession game before Campbell took over the game. The Sabers scored six quick points to take a 30-21 lead, which forced a Waipahu timeout.

Campbell was able to extend the lead thanks to a hot shooting stretch from outside the arc. Balino knocked down the first of five second half triples to give the home team its first double digit lead of the second half, 35-25.

Silva, who scored all of her points in the second half, drilled her first 3-pointer from the right wing to push the Sabers' lead to 39-25. The sophomore guard had another trey to extend Campbell's lead to 20 points and scored on a fast break opportunity to give the Sabers their largest lead of the game, 51-29.
