Iolani smothers Kaimuki, 58-39

Host Iolani started off slow, but managed to breeze past Kaimuki, 58-39 in the opening round of the Iolani Classic on Friday night. The Raiders will play Fairfax (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the quarterfinals, while the Bulldogs will play Mid-Pacific.

Justin Genovia came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points, Hugh Hogland added 12 points and six rebounds for the Raiders.

The Bulldog took an early 3-2 lead after Tayler Espinda's 3, but the Raiders went on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter. Kaimuki outscored Iolani, 11-10 and trailed, 21-14 going into halftime.

Iolani opened up the third quarter on a 7-0 run to make it, 28-14 and the Raiders eventually went up by as much as 20 in the fourth, but Kaimuki managed to cut the deficit to 12. Everyone on Iolani got into the game and the Raiders managed to close out the game on a 7-0 run.

Sifo Lauvao led Kaimuki with 13 points and went 3 of 6 from the 3-point line. Tayler Espinda added 10 points as the Bulldogs shot 16 of 62 from the field.

Iolani shot 11 of 18 from the free throw line and 21 of 54 from the field.

The Raiders outrebounded the Bulldogs 44 to 39, but committed 17 turnovers for the game while Kaimuki had 12.
