No. 3 Mid-Pacific rolls over Waiakea, 9-4

MANOA - It will be the Interscholastic League of Honolulu against the Oahu Interscholastic Association Western Division in Friday's semifinals of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I state baseball tournament.

Chase Wago pitched a complete game and Tyler Yamaguchi drove in five runs and No. 3 Mid-Pacific Institute beat Waiakea, 9-4, Thursday night in the last quarterfinal of the Wally Yonamine Foundation Division I state baseball tournament at Les Murakami Stadium.

The ILH champion and second-seeded Owls (13-3) will play OIA runner-up Mililani (14-3) in the 4 p.m. semifinal and top-seeded and top-ranked Campbell (14-2) will meet ILH runner-up Kamehameha (12-7) in the 7 p.m. semifinal at Les Murakami Stadium. Campbell and Mililani shared the OIA West crown. Campbell, Mililani, Mid-Pacific and Kamehameha are also the top four teams, respectively, in the ScoringLive/OC 16 Power Rankings.

The Owls are the most recent champion among the four, beating Mililani in 2013. The Trojans have lost the last two tournament championship games; they lost to Saint Louis last year. The Sabers, who have been eliminated in the semifinals to the eventual state champion the last two years, are trying to make their first title game since 1978, the only time they won the crown. Kamehameha is trying to get to the title game for the first time since 2006.

Wago gave up four runs, 10 hits and hit a batter with seven strikeouts.

Yamaguchi, the cleanup hitter, had three consecutive RBI singles and a two-run triple on a perfect 4-for-4 night.

Caleb Freitas-Fields was tagged for nine runs, six earned, 12 hits and two walks in five-plus innings.

Gehrig Octavio led Waiakea by batting 2 for 4 with two RBI.
