KS-Hawaii sweeps Moanalua in Kamehameha cup final

KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — Kamehameha-Hawaii took top honors in the fifth annual Kamehameha Cup with a 25-22, 26-24 straight set win over Moanalua in the championship match at Kekuhaupio gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

The Warriors finished the three-day Invitational with a 6-1 mark, losing only to their Kapalama brothers in a Friday pool play game.

"I think these tournaments are great because we start finding out about ourselves," said Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Guy Enriques.

Senior outside hitter Emmett Enriques played a pivotal role in the Warriors' win over Na Menehune. After being hampered by an ankle injury in the Hawaii Boys Volleyball Invitational, Enriques was more aggressive and racked up 11 kills in the final match.

"This is probably the best we've seen Emmett play even though he's probably at 80 percent of what he's really capable of doing," said coach Enriques. "Give him a couple more weeks of volleyball and I think he'll be ready for a good show at the end."

Coach Enriques also said that his team's serving was key in the tournament. Isaiah Laeha had two aces against Moanalua, one of which was the match-clinching point."

"We served very well this entire tournament," said Enriques. "The one game that we lost was because we lost our serving. If we're able to find the target, we're able to stay with any team."

Austin Matautia led Moanalua in the loss with a match-high 13 kills. Although Na Menehune took second place, they defeated Kamehameha-Kapalama twice prior to the final match.
