Hawaii Baptist fights off Christian Academy, 60-50
Hawaii Baptist players celebrate after posting a win over Christian Academy. Tyler Guieb | SLKAILUA – A strong first half helped Hawaii Baptist hold off Christian Academy, 60-50 in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division II contest at Le Jardin's Charles B. Wang Gymnasium Saturday evening.
BJ Hosaka scored a game-high 23 points and Isaac Liva posted a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds to help the Eagles improve to 8-2 in league play. The Patriots fell to 0-10.
Christian Academy saw four players finish in double figures. Joshua Luna led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds. Xavier Matthews and Rylie Schenbeck-Chang each had 12 points and Isaiah Harris chipped in 10. Matthews also had 15 rebounds to finish with a double-double.
Hawaii Baptist led 15-4 after the first quarter and 35-16 at the break. Liva's basket to start of the third quarter gave the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 37-16.
The Patriots answered with a 9-0 run to make the score 37-25 in a span of under two minutes. Michael Dang's 3-pointer ended Christian Academy's run and made it a 15-point game with 5:08 to go in the third.
Hawaii Baptist pushed their lead back up to 20, 47-27 after Danton Tominaga's steal and finish.
Christian Academy would scrap its way back into it throughout the remainder of the second half, but could never whittle Hawaii Baptist's lead down to single digits.
The Eagles has games against Le Jardin and Hanalani to close the season while Christian Academy will try to get its first league win with games against University High and Damien.
