Moanalua routs Leilehua, 59-37 to reach tournament final

Moanalua routed Leilehua 59-37 in the nightcap of the 20th Annual First Hawaiian Bank Moanalua Peek Tournament at Moanalua high school gymnasium on Friday night. 

In the first quarter, Leilehua led 11-6 after Jerri Maluyo passed it to Tatiana Carvalho, who made the layup as she was fouled. However, Ciera O'Brien was fouled as she hit a runner on the baseline as the buzzer sounded and she made the free throw to bring the Na Menehune within 2, 11-9.

Moanalua's LaChae McColor was bothered by early foul trouble and she picked up her second foul with 4:22 remaining in the first quarter.

The Na Menehune were able to capture the lead and outscored the Mules, 20-11 in the second quarter. Hoku Mateo had a block and dribbled all the way down and made the fast break layup as she was fouled. Moanalua went into halftime with the lead 27-22.

The Na Menehune started to pull away in the second half following a Moanalua timeout at 2:44. O'Brien hit a three-pointer near the top of the key to make it 37-31. Obrien led all Na Menehune scorers with 18 points, she made two three-pointers and was 2-of-2 from the free throw line. McColor threw a cross court pass to Jasmine Sagaysay for a three-pointer to put the Na Menehune up by 12, 43-31. Sagaysay finished the game with 9-points, all of them coming from three-point attempts.

McColor found a groove in the second half and scored 8-points in the fourth quarter. She finished the game with 12 points and went 6-of-8 from the free throw line.

Tywanna Abbott led the Mules with 10 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Tatiana Carvalho added 9 points and Jerri Maluyo had 5 assists.

Cherie Bento, McColor and Mateo had 6 rebounds each for the Na Menehune.

Moanalua advances to play Mililani for the championship game at 2:30 pm while Leilehua plays Radford for the third place game at  1:00 pm.
