A statistical look at the OIA Red tourney first round
The first round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference playoffs played out over the weekend and produced mostly lopsided scores - but also some telling statistics.
- The biggest blowout came in Leilehua's 54-17 win over Moanalua while the closest game was Kapolei's 42-27 win over Kailua. The average margin of victory was 26 points.
- The Red West Conference won three of the four first-round games. The lone Red East team to win was McKinley, which beat Waipahu 36-15.
- The winning team averaged 213 rushing yards on 38 carries. All but one winner (McKinley) rushed for at least 231 yards on 36 attempts. Leilehua rushed 42 times for 330 yards. Winning teams averaged 6.1 yards per rush while losing teams averaged 1.8 yards per rush.
- The usually pass-heavy Mules attempted just seven passes all games against Na Menehune. They completed four of them for 109 yards.
- Winning teams rushed for 14 touchdowns and threw 8 TD passes against 4 interceptions. Losing teams rushed for 3 touchdowns and threw 4 TD passes against 11 interceptions.
- On average, losing teams completed 14 of 32 passes (45 percent) for 172 yards or 5.3 yards per pass attempt. Winning teams averaged less completions (8), pass attempts (15) and yards (147), but averaged significantly more (9.6) yards per pass attempt.
- Winning teams ran an average of 53 offensive plays for 360 yards of total offense (6.8 yards per play) while losing teams ran an average of 58 offensive plays for 249 yards of total offense (4.3 yards per play).
