Tobias Powell and the Radford Rams are in the hunt in securing a spot in the OIA White playoffs. Greg Yamamoto | SLIt's coming down to the wire in the diverse OIA White division. Although three teams have already been eliminated from the playoff race, none of the four OIA White playoff berths have been clinched yet. Here's the best-case scenario for each team to clinch a playoff spot.
IN THE HUNT
Kaiser Cougars
With an undefeated league record (5-0), it's hard not to picture Kaiser in the post season. However, there is a strange alternate reality that have the Cougars as spectators rather than combatants in the playoffs. To prevent the unthinkable completely, all Kaiser needs to do is win one of their remaining three games. Another win punches Kaiser's ticket in as 2-3 teams Nanakuli and Kalaheo can only finish with a best record of 5-3.
In order for Kaiser to host a playoff game, Kaiser needs to make sure that they finish with an equal or better record than Radford and Kalani, and also beat (4-1) Pearl City when the two teams meet up.
Radford Rams
Going back into the strange alternate reality, the 5-1 Rams could potentially miss out on a playoff spot. That possibility might not be as severe as the Cougars', but it's still possible. Radford has a greater chance at making the playoffs because they have already played four of the other five teams vying for a playoff spot. Additionally, wins over Nanakuli and Kalaheo give them the tiebreaker should they finish with the same record at the end of the season.
Like the Cougars, all the Rams need to do is win one of their remaining two games to clinch a playoff spot. Unfortunately for the Rams, they will have to wait a week to get that sixth win.
If Radford hopes to overtake Kaiser for the number one seed, the Rams need to win their remaining games and hope Kaiser drops at least two of their remaining three games.
Pearl City Chargers
Pearl City currently has a 4-1 league record and should be fairly confident about their chances of making the postseason. A lot can happen though with every Pearl City game remaining playing a huge part in the playoff picture.
A win this week against Nanakuli will not only ensure Pearl City' playoff spot, but also knock the Golden Hawks out of the picture for good. After this week, Pearl City closes out the season with meetings with undefeated Kaiser and one-loss Radford. Wins in these matchups could potentially give the Chargers a chance to host a playoff game.
Kalani Falcons
Having already faced the six teams still in the playoff race bodes well for the 4-2 Falcons. With wins over Pearl City, Kalaheo, and Nanakuli, the Falcons get the edge in the standings should they happen to finish with the same record as one of the aforementioned teams. In order for the Falcons to ensure their playoff spot, all they need to do is win one of their remaining games against either Anuenue or Waialua.
Nanakuli Golden Hawks
After shocking the Cougars in the OIA White playoffs a year ago, the 2-3 Golden Hawks now find themselves on the outside looking in. However, Nanakuli still controls their fate and should get in if they win all of their remaining three games. A loss this week eliminates them from the playoff race completely.
Kalaheo Mustangs
The Mustangs' chances at making the postseason are slimmer than any of the above teams. Even if Kalaheo wins out, they will need some help to get into the playoffs. Because of their losses to Kalani and Pearl City, the Mustangs will need to finish with a better record than one of them to get into the postseason.
The best case scenario for the Mustangs to get into the playoffs is as follow:
- Kalaheo wins their remaining three games against Waialua, Nanakuli and Kaiser, finishing with a 5-3 record.
- Pearl City drops their remaining games to Nanakuli, Kaiser and Radford to finish at 4-4.
- Nanakuli beats Pearl City but falls to Kalaheo finishing with a 3-5 or 4-4 regular season record.
- Kalani drops their remaining games to Anuenue and Waialua.
Kalaheo will get into the playoffs if all of these four conditions are met.
ELIMINATED
Waialua Bulldogs
Even though the Bulldogs cannot make the playoffs, they can still play spoiler in another team's postseason dreams. A win this week against Kalaheo will eliminate the Mustangs from the playoff race.
Roosevelt Rough Riders
The Rough Riders have a tough schedule with two five-win teams remaining, but a Rough Rider win in one of these matchups can play a factor in the overall final standings.
Anuenue Na Koa
Still searching for their first win of the year, Na Koa will have three more games to get it done. Two of those games are against Kalani and Nanakuli which are two teams still in the playoff hunt. A Na Koa win in these games will throw a serious wrench in those teams playoff hopes.
