Punahou Invitational set for December 18

The third annual Punahou Invitational Girls Wrestling Tournament will be held Dec. 18, 2012, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

More than 225 student-athletes from public and private schools across Hawai'i and from one school in Arizona are slated to compete in the state's only girls wrestling tournament.

For the first time, the event will host wrestlers from the continental U.S., as students from Monument Valley High School on the Navajo Indian Reservation of northeastern Arizona take to the mats.

The tournament, also known as the Pa‘ani Challenge, has the mission to raise awareness of girls wrestling and increase opportunities for competition.

On Dec. 17, 2012, the day prior to competition, participants will have the opportunity to attend a college fair and a wrestling clinic with 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun, a former Hawai'i state champion and the first female wrestler from Hawai‘i to receive a medal at the Olympics.
