If Kapolei's performance in the final game of McKinley's Black and Gold Classic is any indication, head coach Gary Ellison may need to agonize more this season about who to leave on his bench, rather than wonder who he has to bring off of it.

Led by senior guards Dorian Antonio-Martos and Elia McKeague, the Hurricanes' bench (40 pts) outscored both University High (21 pts), and the Kapolei starters (22 pts), in a blowout 62-21 win in the closing game of the preseason invitational held at Student Council Gymnasium.

"We're trying to develop a bench, we trying to get these guys ready." said Eliison. "This year, we want to rely on our bench to help get the starters some rest."

The Hurricanes started off slowly, trailing 6-4 early on, but caught fire with just under 3 minutes left in the first, going on a 21-0 run over an 8 minute span to take a commanding 34-11 lead into the intermission.

During that span, it was Antonio-Martos who did the damage offensively, scoring six points, and his backcourt mate McKeague who supplied some defensive punch, forcing four steals.

"We're trying to incorporate some of the new players coming in." said guard Christopher Dillard. "And Elia and Dorian, they're really big players for us and they're coming off the bench going strong, and we saw what they can do."

Kapolei held the Jr. Bows under double digits in every quarter, utilizing what appeared to be exclusively man-to-man defensive sets throughout the game, forcing a storm of turnovers that were converted into instant offense in transition.

"We're a defensively minded team, offense comes after defense." said Dillard. "We focused on that today and the second team really shut them down."

Nine different reserves scored in the contest, including 9 a piece from Antonio-Martos and McKeague, and 8 from Mason Alfaro, a standout defensive back on the Hurricanes' football team.

"He didn't play for us last year, he had a concussion from football, but he's back this year." said Ellison. "He's picking everything up really fast so he's going to be a huge help for us this year too."

Alfaro also added 3 steals and 2 rebounds off the bench. Dillard led all scorers with 10 points and chipped in a pair of steals.

RJ Realubit had 8 points for the Junior Rainbows.
