Mililani Trojans

Head coach/Offensive coordinator: Rod York (11th season)
Defensive coordinator: Silila Malepeai

Players to watch: OL Tavo Motuapuaka (6-4, 280, Sr.), OL Movea Pine (6-4, 270, Sr.), OL/DL Mikey Agasiva (6-1, 265, Sr.), WR Gavin Hunter (6-2, 185, Jr.), S/LB Makanalea Meyer (6-0, 190, Sr.)

Coach's words: "We take it one week at a time. Whether we win or lose the game, we're still winning because we define winning as doing the best that you can in everything. I know it's cliche, but it's true and that way you're always happy, but just hoping for a season and a compete season; we're not taking it for granted anymore." - Rod York

SL's take: After starting out the 2019 season 6-0, the Trojans went 2-5 the rest of the way. Of course, their losses came against St. John Bosco (California), Saint Louis (twice), Punahou and Kahuku. In those losses, they were outscored by a combined margin of 141 to 34, including a pair of shut outs. The offense should be improved this season, despite being under the direction of a freshman QB in Kini McMillan (5-11, 180), who is expected to win the won over junior Mana Tarape (5-10, 180), a Campbell transfer. Esiah Gideon (6-0, 160, Jr.), a freshman backup two years ago, adds depth to the position. Whichever QB takes the reins of the offense, he will have the luxury of working behind the position group with the most experience on the team, the offensive line. Motuapuaka and Pine are a pair of talented tackles, while Agasiva is the most seasoned of the bunch and will start at both C and DE. Ano Tovi (6-1, 275, Sr.) and Malachi James Fainga (6-0, 275, Sr.) were also varsity players in 2019. Manoa Hallums (5-8, 172, Jr.) is a strong runner with good vision and could thrive behind that big OL, but it's at the receiver positions that the Trojans are especially deep. The headliner is Hunter, a speedster who ran a 4.4, electronically-timed 40-yard dash at a combine in July and can also play safety. Starting SBs Lando Werner-Celes (5-10, 155, Sr.) and Kapono Hookano-Sallas (5-10, 170, Sr.) are both capable of making electrifying plays, as are backups Raymond Roller (5-6, 150, Jr.) and Kanoa Ferreira (5-10, 160, So.), who nearly left to attend IMG Academy in Florida earlier this year. But after the spring, York said it was the defense that was ahead of the offense, largely due to the playmaking ability of Meyer, a Damien transfer who is a hybrid type with tremendous speed. Kamaehu Roman (5-11, 205, Jr.) is expected to be another impact player among the LBs. Defensive line and the secondary, however, are areas of concern with little to no varsity experience. Expect high-scoring games and offensive fireworks from this Mililani team this fall. With a strong OL, a promising young QB and no shortage of talented pass-catchers, the ceiling is extremely high with this group. The Trojans should be right there in the mix for both the OIA and state championships come December.
