McKinley Tigers

Head coach/Defensive coordinator: Kale Ane (22nd season overall, 1st at McKinley)
Offensive coordinator: Teetai Ane

Players to watch: S/LB Isaac Buchanan (6-1, 193, Sr.), QB Dustin Chow (6-1 180, Jr.), SB Joab Cruz (5-7, 160, Sr.), WR Preston Note (5-9, 152, Jr.), WR Nathen Rodriguez (6-0, 175, Sr.)

Coach's words: "Our team will get better as the season progresses. They are learning new concepts and strategies. We also want it to be fun and exciting at the same time. I'm learning as well as this is my first time at this level and there is a lot to prepare for. We will be competing against good veteran coaches and successful programs. We're looking forward to the challenge." - Kale Ane

SL's take: The Tigers welcome a coach new to the program, but certainly not one new to prep football in Kale Ane, the former longtime Punahou coach. Ane got the job in late April and got the ball rolling with his players in mid-June. He inherits a team that won just one game in 2019 and finished eighth out of nine teams in the OIA Division II standings. Ane brought over a handful of his former Buffanblu assistants, including his son, Teetai, who will coordinate the offense, and former Damien head coach Dean Nakagawa. The Tigers have approximately 40 players on the team, but with no JV team this fall, those numbers are slightly inflated - although, they tally about 15 total linemen, according to Ane. While there is decent size on the OL, the players lack varsity experience and many of them are brand new to the sport. McKinley will utilize the same four-wide offensive formation that was employed at Punahou, which fits well with its personnel as the receiving corps is the most senior-heavy position group on the team. Rodriguez, Note, Cruz and Isaiah Cardenas (5-7, 132, Sr.) round out the unit. The offense would like to work toward an uptempo, no-huddle pace, but that will be tied to the development of Chow, a Farrington transfer. Chow's arm doesn't lack for strength, but his touch and decision-making have room for improvement. However, his ability to use his legs to extend plays while keeping his eyes downfield will serve the Tigers well. Ane is very high on Buchanan, who will play the rover position that former Punahou standout (and current-Notre Dame player) Marist Liufau excelled at. Buchanan will also see time at RB on the offensive side of the ball. Others expected to contribute in the defensive secondary are Chris Pham (5-6, 160, Sr.), Paxton Nouchi (5-6, 150, Jr.) and Alex Simpson (6-0, 170, Jr.).
