Head coach/Defensive coordinator: Kaluka Maiava (2nd season) Offensive coordinator: Scott Hendricks
Players to watch: WR/DB Kacen Hamada (5-10, 175, Sr.), LB/OL Kamuela Gaughen (6-0, 210, Sr.), LB/RB Braeden Samura (6-0, 215, Sr.), WR/DB Ekolu Kainoa (5-10, 175, Sr.), DB/WR Jordan Hanano (6-1, 185, Sr.)
Coach's words: "You can expect fast and physical football and we feet that we are at the top of our division." - Kaluka Maiava
SL's take: A year after it limped across the finish line with a 1-7 record in 2018, Hawaii Prep experienced a resurgence with a 6-3 mark in Maiava's first year at the private school. The 2021 season will mark HPA's first season without a new coach to start the year since 2015. Under the tutelage of Maiava - a former Baldwin High and USC linebacker who went to play five seasons in the NFL - Ka Makani improved their defensive numbers drastically in 2019. It went from allowing more than 35 points per game the year prior, to just over 16 that season. That number could improve once again this fall, as HPA returns a large handful of players who were sophomores on that six-win squad two years ago, including the quintet of Hamada, Gaughen, Samura, Kainoa and Hanano. Samura possesses both power and speed and along with Gaughen, was an All-BIIF honorable mention selection as a sophomore. Expect this veteran-laden HPA team to challenge two-time defending champ Kamehameha-Hawaii for the league crown.
