Offensive Player of the Year: Kainoa Carvalho, Kahuku, Jr., WR

The dynamic receiver and return man for the Red Raiders was simply electric on the gridiron in 2021. The 5-foot-7, 160-pound nephew of coach Sterling Carvalho produced 1,029 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 64 catches. He averaged 16.1 yards per catch and 103 yards per game. Carvalho recorded six consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards to close out the season, during which he hauled in eight TDs. His best performance came in a regular-season win over Mililani, when he notched 10 grabs for 194 yards and two TDs. He also returned a pair of kickoffs for touchdowns against Farrington and had five total returns for score on the year. Carvalho's special teams contributions weren't limited to the return game, as he converted 45 extra points and two field goals in the kicking game and was responsible for 147 total points for the Open Division state champs.

Defensive Player of the Year: Liona Lefau, Kahuku, Jr., LB

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound linebacker was to the Red Raider defense what Kainoa Carvalho was to the offense: a big-time contributor in numerous facets and the heartbeat of the unit. Lefau led a Kahuku defense that held opponents under 10 points and 165 yards per game. It allowed only 47.4 rushing yards each time out and gave up more than one score in just three games all season. In the state championship game against Saint Louis, Lefau displayed his versatility. He posted a team-high five tackles — including one sack — and intercepted a pass that was eventually recycled for a score. He also caught a 19-yard touchdown pass on offense and scooped up a blocked punt on special teams that ignited the 49-14 Kahuku onslaught. Lefau, along with fellow All-Hawaii First Team selections, linebacker Leonard Ah You and defensive back Brock Fonoimoana, are expected back for their senior seasons in the fall.

Coach of the Year: Sterling Carvalho, Kahuku

Under Carvalho's guidance the Red Raiders made a transformation from a run-heavy, smash-mouth offense to a pass-first, quick-striking aerial attack. Kahuku averaged nearly 45 points and 335 yards per game in 2021, while its defense was staunch and steady, as usual. Carvalho guided the Red Raiders to a perfect 10-0 record, their second straight OIA crown and their first state championship since 2015. With its 35-point win over Saint Louis in the state final, Kahuku laid claim to its first title in the Open Division.
