Mililani needs overtime to advance over Kapolei, 3-2


 



Kristen Fujinaga scored on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute yesterday afternoon to lift Mililani to a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Kapolei in the opening round of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Division I Girls Soccer State Championships.

The Trojans, seeded No. 4 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association, improved to 11-2-1 in the regular and postseason and will face No. 4 seed and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Kealakehe (14-0) in tomorrow's 3 p.m. quarterfinal at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

Kapolei, the OIA's No. 6 seed, fell to 9-4-1 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against Kaiser.

Fujinaka's PK came after a foul in the goal box prevented a one-on-one shot from point-blank range.

Arielle Stoyanow's goal in the 12th minute gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead, but TJ Reyno tied it just one minute later. Hailey Berg then scored in the 30th minute and Kapolei led 2-1 at halftime. Shyani Terukina then tied it in the 47th minute.

In other opening-round matches:

DIVISION I

Pearl City 2, Konawaena 1 (2OT)

Parishaan Carter-Amorin scored in the 94th minute to lift the OIA No. 5 seed Chargers, who improved to 10-1-4 and advance to today's 5 p.m. quarterfinal against No. 2 seed and OIA champ Moanalua (10-0-3).

Konawaena, the BIIF runner-up, fell to 10-4-1 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against 'Aiea.

After a scoreless first half, Jasmine Ward put the Wildcats up, 1-0, with a goal in the 47th minute but Pearl City's Sarah Ing tied it 20 minutes later.

Kamehameha-Maui 2, Kaiser 1

Lily Higashino scored in the 50th minute to lift the Maui Interscholastic League Warriors (11-1-1) past the OIA third seeded Cougars (11-2-1).

Callie Akazawa's goal in the eighth minute gave Kaiser a quick 1-0 lead, but Makana Pundyke tied it in the 47th minute.

Kamehameha-Maui will face No. 1 seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha (10-1-1) in tonight's 7 o'clock feature quarterfinal.

Iolani 7, 'Aiea 1

The Raiders (10-0-3) scored three times in the first nine minutes and led 4-0 at halftime to advance past the OIA sixth-seeded Na Ali'i (6-9) and into today's 1 p.m. quarterfinal against No. 3 seed and MIL champ Baldwin (13-1).

'Aiea will face Konawaena in today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket.

Amanda McCaskill started the barrage with a header in the second minute, and Alyssa Kim followed by knocking in a short goal from the right side. Kama Pascua's goal in the ninth minute made it 3-0, and Sarah Oyadomari pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 31st minute.


DIVISION II


Makua Lani 4, Leilehua 3 (PKs, 4-2)

The Lions, seeded No. 4 in the BIIF DII, blocked two Mule shots in the penalty kick session to improve to 8-7 and advance to today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal vs. BIIF DII champ Hawai'i Prep (13-1).

Leilehua fell to 4-9-1 and into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket match against Honoka'a.

Makua Lani took a 2-0 lead after Mercedes DeCarli's third-minute goal and Karissa Komo's score a half-hour later, but Tamara Morioka closed it to 2-1 two minutes before halftime.

Kelli Dorn then made it 3-1 a minute later, but Karly Shigeoka tied it after goals in the 42nd and 69th minutes.

After two scoreless overtime periods, both teams converted their first penalty kicks but had their second shots blocked. Amanda Madigan then put the Lions ahead 2-1, and the Mules' next shot was blocked.

Komo then gave Makua Lani a 3-1 lead but Shigeoka closed it to 3-2. Malia Kaiwi then clinched the victory with the final PK.

Radford 1, Kamehameha-Hawaii 0 (OT)

Abigail Granger scored in the 84th minute to lift the OIA No. 4 seed Rams, who improved to 4-9-1 and will face No. 1 seed Mid-Pacific (5-6-1) of the ILH.

The Warriors (9-5-1) out-shot Radford but fell into today's 1 p.m. consolation bracket game against Seabury Hall.

Kalaheo 4, Honoka'a 3

Kalaheo, the OIA White Conference runner-up, overcame a 2-1 second-half deficit to score three straight goals and improve to 6-5-2 entering today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal against No. 2 seed and Kaua'i Interscholastic Federation champion Kaua'i High (7-0-1).

Honoka'a, the BIIF's third seed, fell to 8-7.

Sarah McAllaster scored in the ninth minute to give the Mustangs a quick 1-0 lead, but Kelly Ann Greenwell tied it 15 minutes later. Allie Shiraki then put the Dragons up, 2-1, in the 46th minute, but Kiana Forsythe tied it again three minutes later and then gave Kalaheo the lead in the 60th minute.

Hayli Gibson then scored an insurance goal 10 minutes later, which the Mustangs needed as Monica Carlos closed it to 4-3 in the final minute.�

Kapa'a 3, Seabury Hall 0

After a scoreless first half, KIF runner-up Kapa'a (4-3-2) got goals from Taylor Ochoa (66th minute), Rachel Hinkle (69th) and Tori Pezario (79th) and shut out the Spartans (3-7-4).

The Warriors advance to today's 3 p.m. quarterfinal vs. No. 4 seed and OIA White Conference champ Waipahu (8-4).
