KAHUKU - A second-quarter safety set the tone for Kahuku en route to a 16-0 win against Farrington Friday night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East football at Carelton E. Weimer Athletic Field.

A homecoming crowd watched the Red Raiders (7-0 overall, 5-0 Red East) secure at least a share of the East title and clinch the division's top seed for the 10-team OIA tournament. Kahuku, ranked first in the SL-OC 16 Football Power Rankings, closes the regular season by hosting Castle next week.

The Governors (4-3, 2-3) dropped into a three-way tie for fourth in the East with Moanalua and Roosevelt. Farrington plays Moanalua next week.

Rain earlier in the afternoon left Kahuku's field muddy, hampering each team's ability to throw. Each team passed for under 100 yards, but the difference was Kahuku's ability to establish a run.

"We tried to be balanced, but it was tough," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "The quarterback couldn't get any velocity on his passes. The ball was muddy, so it was kind of slippery. The running game saved us."

Tailback Aofaga Wily led the way with 119 yards on 21 carries, including a four-yard TD plunge. Tailback Tyrone Brown added 53 yards rushing and fullback Fonoivasa Mata'afa had 46 yards, including a one-yard TD, to help the Red Raiders total 213 yards rushing.

But the stage was set by the defense. After a scoreless first quarter, the Red Raiders finally got on the board early in the second quarter. A 54-yard punt by Josh Sorensen and some hustle coverage pinned the Governors at their own 1. After fullback Jordon Hakuole was held to no gain, tailback Scotland Smith was tackled in the end zone by Nicholas Acoba and Tolovae Tito for a safety that put Kahuku ahead, 2-0.

"We were lucky we had that safety," Torres said. "That safety made it so we could be more conservative (offensively)."

Kahuku used all running plays in its eight-play, 55-yard scoring drive that culminated in Wily's four-yard TD run with 59 seconds left in the third quarter that, combined with Josh Sorensen's PAT, increased the Red Raiders' lead to 9-0.

Late in the fourth quarter, an interception by Tigi Hill to the Farrington 11 set up Mata'afa's one-yard TD run that capped a four-play drive with 1:23 left in the game.

"We just had to stick to our techniques because the field was muddy," Kahuku right guard Jamal Napeahi said of the team's run-blocking ability despite poor footing from the mud.

It was tough night for the Governors, who turned over the ball four times, twice on interceptions (the other was by Trayson Medeiros). One of two lost fumbles came on the ensuing kickoff after Kahuku's second TD.

Farrington entered the game with key injuries on its offensive line.

"Our starting center was down. Our right guard was hurt," Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. "Our left tackle sat out for disciplinary reasons. (Losing) three guys really hurt us. We couldn't get a rhythm going in our running game. We had to mix and match on our offensive line."

Farrington managed just 24 net yards rushing.
